Richard, Giles and Paul are back and this time we're looking at debuts, and specifically debut stories where the Doctor is not treated as a classical hero. First we look at Sixth Doctor opener The Twin Dilemma and then we examine the Twelfth Doctor's initial story Deep Breath. Along the way we have a surprisingly wide-ranging chat about colonialism, bad science, Crimewatch, TV writers who go a bit mad when given the chance to do Sci-Fi, sexism and historical appropriation.

Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com

The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

I only like bondage anthills personally.

So we’ve come to the end of our little journey, which means it’s time to jump back into the late 2000’s for some quality early 21st century television. But before that, we have to suffer through Pip and Jane Baker’s masterpiece. Some say it’s their greatest work, their magnum opus. It’s Time and the Rani, written by Pip and Jane Baker and aired between September 7th and 28th, 1987.

Ben and Mark take a before and after look at solar flare damage in Doctor Who - pairing 'In the Forest of the Night' with 'The Ark in Space'. Is 'In the Forest of the Night' really all that bad? Is 'The Ark in Space' really one of the all time classics? Under discussion: Doomed relationships, challenging children, childishness, body horror, bubble wrap and how the multicultural vision of 'Star Trek' doesn't always match with a BBC directors address book. This episode was recorded 14 June 2020 and the actual Doctor Who discussion begins 11:54 into the podcast where we talk about Tom Baker the Doctor who caught alight in the United States and opening up to his tenure in the programme. But first, leading off the podcast, Ben celebrates his team's, the Four-to-Zoomsday's, triumph in the Quiz of Rassilon. David then asks a simple question about a sporting metaphor and the two get mired the two get mired in cricket talk for a good five minutes. After that, the two discuss Churchill in light of statues coming down across the UK and the US; this part of the podcast was shunted off to the end of the podcast and begins after a musical interlude from Heathcliff Blair and begins at 34:34. (Think of it as studio floor Blu-ray extra footage.) Once that discussion runs it course, we talk about Tom Baker's tenure as the Doctor beginning 11:54 running through to the aforementioned musical interlude. All rather confusing isn't it. Oh, and we briefly mention the December 1981 interview of Tom with Mavis Nicholson which is definitely worth a watch. Anywho... we're back to season 13 next episode. Opening "Davros' Megalomania" and closing "The Doctor's Theme" music was composed by Dudley Simpson for season 12 stories and arranged and performed by Heathcliff Blair on the "Pyramids of Mars" disc.

Hey, it’s JB. Chris, Sean and I went almost three hours recording this one. We were really inebriated and got into a very cathartic and politically charged discussion, most of which you’re NOT going to hear. I’m lucky I got an hour of usable material for this episode. Please forgive the audio levels. I promise to be the designated driver next time we record an episode, cause I get really fucking loud in this. CONTENTS INCLUDE: A botched intro, listening to Yes and Queen, Chris gets tested for Covid-19, sponsorship, “professional” podcasts, problematic creative people and cancel culture, James Cordon’s Doctor Who Cosplay Challenge, bitching about aging (again), what’s a Cloister Wraith?, Moffat mansplaining the Bootstrap Paradox, Nicola Bryant offering personal hypnotherapy sessions, why do they defer to the First Doctor on multi-Doctor stories?, JB really needs to stop yelling into the mic, the “Lockdown Video” featuring Bill & Nardole, Doc liked “City of Death”, watching “The Sensorites” as punishment, “The Edge of Destruction” as a Pinter play, should the Police Box be abolished from the series?, filming new episodes on video and CSO, “Rosa” and confronting our white privilege, Sean praises “Vincent and the Doctor”, “Home”, everyone should watch Mr. Rogers, cocky leaky soup, “The Noodle Doodle Man” by Jon Pertwee.

A Doctor Who series and a government ends, and a new government begins in the 1970s which brought in an element of internationalism. In 2020, there might be an end of an age with isolationist nationalistic agendas cropping up. We can but analyse what Doctor Who and the world was in 1970, compare it to what it is in 2020, and murmur disapprovingly.

Lewis Moon and Dr Cool present an edition of the programme where there is more talk about worthers originals than Doctor Who itself. This week they venture into both the Hartnell and Tennant eras as they present their thoughts on the Web Planet, and share how they would have improved Fear Her in the second episode of Redeeming the Irredeemable. But was Lewis Moon right, or was Dr Cool? Make your mind up for yourself... (Next Week-There is some Pertwee review action with planet of the Spiders plus the Dominators is the third story to be redeemed)

This week Deb comes up with a cooperative way to friend-source game material for the podcast. Join her as she puts Erika, Katrina, and Lynne through a new edition of "Seven Minutes in Heaven/Hell" with topics by friend-of-the-show (and as we recorded, birthday-boy) Kyle Anderson! We're calling this new targeted crowd-sourcing feature "We Get By with a Little Help from Our Friends".

What do you have to say about these topics? Drop us a tweet or let us know in the comments!

This title was released in May 2020. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until June 30th 2020, and on general sale after this date. July 1944. The TARDIS materialises in a small village near Rouen, where celebrations are in full swing. A joyful France is in the midst of liberation as the local population welcome a battalion of Allied soldiers – along with a colourfully dressed Doctor and his two rather excited friends. But there are screams amidst the celebrations as an angry crowd dish out their brand of justice to one of their own that they have branded a traitor. While Constance and Flip find themselves on opposite sides of a war beyond a war, the Doctor has other concerns. The local community is used to the fires of battle, but a new type of blaze is burning – leaping from aircraft to aircraft, man to man – and this fire seems to be just as eager for revenge as the village mob.

This six-parter is a downright wacky romp with questionably named projects, The Master at his best, tools of questionable shape, Atlantis (!), UNIT, Bessie's Super Drive, slow motion effects, and Season 9 ends with a naked Sgt. Benton! And that, seriously, is just the tip of the iceberg that is The Time Monster! Strap in and let's dive in!

Many of you may still be locked up with your family but, with any luck, your house-mates don’t include a glowing alien skull, a gun-toting Teuton and a creepy occultist.

Even Benylin Bandersnatch’s mum would be of little comfort, haunted as she is by a noisy, slimy creature (named Adam Colby).

The TARDIS team come to the rescue but K9’s lost his voice, Leela’s lost some of her hair and the Doctor’s lost his ability to distinguish Jelly Babies from Liquorice Allsorts.

Luckily, the Tylers (not those Tylers!) are on hand to dispense cake, rock salt and Mummerset premonitions.

But did Image of the Fendahl give Jim and Martin a burst of primal power or suck out their collective life-force?

    Listen to find out!

We also review the audiobooks of The Five Doctors and The Daemons.

    Also available on Spotify.
