Podcastica Episode 280: The Curse of The Black Spot OR Becalmed and Carry On
PodcasticaWe keep that Season 6 train a'rollin friends with The Curse of The Black Spot! Flimsy pirate metaphors aside, we really enjoyed this episode, especially coming back to it basically knowing how it plays out and picking up on the cues and the story's own rules. Lots of great banter! Smith's ability to rattle off technobabble is without equal here! So swash those buckles and let's get into it!

#202 - The Scottish Podcast
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2Ben, having recently installed an art exhibit at Balmoral Castle, has been pondering the great impact that Scotland and the Scots have made on Doctor Who. David was surprised to learn that the Brigadier wasn't always Scottish and it was director Douglas Camfield that gave Col. Lethbridge his hyphenated surname Stewart. Jamie McCrimmon, Amy Pond, and three Doctors Who from Scotland, plus one showrunner, Scotland is ever-present in the TARDIS. Opening and closing music is from Terror of the Zygons, composed by Geoffrey Burgon. We recorded this episode on 2 April 2022.

Who's He? At The Movies | High Plains Drifter
Who's He?In this episode of the Who's He? Podast....
Who's He? At The Movies | High Plains Drifter
In Phil's first look at a movie for a very long time, he picked 1973's High Plains Drifter starring Clint Eastwood.
The story follows a mysterious stranger, who arrives in the small town of Lago, situated in the high plains of the American west. The townspeople are terrorised by a gang of outlaws who are due to be released from prison soon, and they hire the Stranger to protect them.
But this movie is western with a supernatural twist and turns the pioneering west on its head.

Episode 21 - The Ice Warriors (with Frazer Gregory)
Doctor Who LiteratureIt's March 1976, and, it's not the first Target novelization to feature The Ice Warriors, but it is the novelization of their very first TV adventure. It's Brian Hayles' second, and, sadly, final, Target novelization.
After a discussion of the news this week in New York City-based Doctor Who fandom, Jason welcomes back to the show Frazer Gregory, to discuss the Ice Warriors novelization. The two of us exchange dramatic readings of favorite passages, discuss how well Hayles captured the 2nd Doctor in print, along with all the other supporting characters and monsters. We come at this book from different perspectives, having discovered it at very different times in our lives. And Frazer makes a run at becoming the King of 20 Questions on Doctor Who Literature... can he do it?
Jason concludes with his review of the Ice Warriors novelization. And we'll see you next week!

Unblocking the Sink
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastWe’ve been off the air for a few months now, but apparently all it takes to bring us all back together is a few thousand Daleks desperate to find out who’s been playing them Bizet’s Carmen from deep inside their terrifyingly impregnable prison. Unfortunately none of us can muster much interest in any of that: instead, we’re worrying about the state of Amy and Rory’s marriage and wondering why on earth the new girl has turned up a year early. It’s Asylum of the Daleks.
Notes and Links
As is now well recorded, the B-Ark was a giant spaceship built by the people of the planet Golgafrincham, so that they could launch into space an entirely useless third of their population, including the telephone sanitisers and advertising account executives. You can learn more about the wisdom of the people of Golgafrincham in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Oswin is an old Anglo-Saxon name meaning “friend of God”. An Oswine was king of Northumbria in the Seventh Century; his predecessor was King Osric. Ingrid Oliver’s Doctor Who character, first introduced in Day of the Doctor, is called Osgood, and Richard is correct that the Os- element means God in both names.
Richard also mentions Jean Cocteau’s La belle et la bête (1946), particularly as an inspiration for the strange vision Amy has of Daleks as people as she succumbs to the Asylum planet’s Dalekifying influence.

Episode 76: Plutocracy
Something WhoAfter an interlude for several special episodes, we've brought back the original Something Who team, and after a close encounter with an AI bot we chat about a couple of stories that are capitalist allegories.
First we'll look at 4th Doctor story The Sunmakers from Season 15, and after that we'll examine 12th Doctor outing Oxygen from Series 10. This episode consists the first half of that conversation, featuring The Sumakers. Next time we'll have more to say on The Sunmakers, then move onto OxygenPlease like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com
Giles' book A History of the Universe in 21 Stars: (and 3 Imposters) can be found in all good bookshops and also here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Universe-21-Stars-Imposters/dp/1787394654/
Head over to https://www.bigfinish.com/, where we all love Paul's stories.
Richard has another podcast with new co-host Nicola, called "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" and it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. Go to https://ifhurtnotwork.podbean.com/ and https://ifhurtnot.work for more.
Our cover art was designed for us by Bea Garrido. She's a really talented artist, who you can find on Twitter using @BeaGarrido00, where, among other artworks, you can get hold of the prints of some remarkable paintings of characters from Doctor Who.

Episode 74 - Time-Flight (with Frazer Gregory)
Doctor Who LiteratureIt's 1983! And the second-ever novelization of a Peter Davison story, released just in time for the end of TV's Season 20.
Joining me this week is Frazer Gregory (@FelixFrazer). We have an epic discussion of "Time-Flight" the book and TV, and play an involved game of "Target Books First Lines" -- turning the tables on Frazer after he sprung this game on ME on an earlier episode.
You can hear a lot of Frazer's recent appearances on other Doctor Who podcasts such as WHO Corner to Corner.
And Jim Sangster (@MonsterMaker), who contributed the excellent show open this week, can recently be heard on Reality Bomb and the Doctor Who Target Book Club Podcast.
You can read Waris Hussein's 1963 diaries here.
Also mentioned in this episode is David Gerrold's very funny book about the genesis of Star Trek: TOS "The Trouble with Tribbles".
Doctor Who Literature is now a member of the Direction Point Doctor Who podcast network.

Level of Ambiguity
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, we’re joined under the Doctor’s bed by Fiona Tomney, to discuss whether monsters are real or imaginary or both, and to squee repeatedly over the Capaldi performance. It’s Listen.
Notes and links
We don’t actually talk about the Missy Reveal in our episode on The Time Meddler. The Missy Reveal at the end of Dark Water was first broadcast the day before the release of Flight Through Entirety Episode 13, Airwick Gatport, which means that the Capaldi Era was broadcast into a world where Flight Through Entirety was still discussing Doctor Who from the 1960s.
The Blair Witch Project (1999) was a found-footage style horror movie that was absolutely huge at the time of its release. Like Listen, it hints at the monster repeatedly without ever really showing it on screen.
