Primary Sources – April 1983
The Doctor Who ShowWelcome to the sixth episode of the podcast we’re dropping on the feed every month in between our regular monthly shows.
These are short (20 minute-ish) shows where Rob sits down with a guest and reads letters – the primary sources of the title – about Doctor Who from the 80s and 90s, for the purpose of kick-starting a conversation. Vitally, the guest doesn’t know anything about the letters until the recording.
In this episode, Rob talks to his co-host from the Doctor Who Show, Dave!
This is Doctor Who without a safety net. The conversations could go anywhere the guest wants them to go.
This is Primary Sources.

139: The Hand of Fear
The Krynoid PodcastSo it’s time to go home for Andy Pandy fangirl, Sarah Jane Smith.
And there’s a hand pulling the strings in this show too, giving tupperware a bad name and Professor Watson a bad day at the power plant.
Handily, crystalline cosmic crook Eldrad can reform herself from her moribund mitt and then she herself suffers from a wandering hand from her leading man.
For a change, we leave a quarry to land on an alien planet where ‘she’ becomes a ‘he’, the decibel level rockets and he – and the serial – fall off a cliff.
But is it OK to fancy Eldrad?
How many (if any) puerile ‘ring’ jokes should be allowed in one podcast episode?
And do Jim and Martin think The Hand of Fear deserves a thumbs up? Or do they give it the finger?
Listen and you might get an answer to some or none of the above.
The lads also review the brand new audiobooks of Dalek and The Crimson Horror!
Also available on Spotify.

Real Characters
Last year we asked ourselves and our listeners a simple but important question: What makes Doctor Who important to you? The answer now lies within the pages of Real Characters: The Psychology of Parasocial Relationships with Media Characters, by Dr. Karen Shackleford, PhD (Ed.) from Fielding University Press providing insight into why we connect with fictional characters. The Doctor Changes, but the Feelings Stay the Same, is the bow-tie worthy Eleventh Chapter. Real Characters is available now on Amazon.

338: I’ll Try To Remember, But I Probably Won’t (The Middle Men)
Trust Your DoctorIs there a reason why after doing the podcast for so long we have literally no short term memory?
You ever heard that song? You know the one. “something something stuck in the middle with you.” The only official way to watch The Middle Men is to have that song playing just on constant repeat while watching. That’s it. That’s the official way to watch this episode, you heard it from us first. It’s The Middle Men, written by and aired on August 12, 2011.
Show-notes:
6:40: The Stargate Wiki mentions that Eric Steinberg is of Korean and “mixed European” descent with no source or citation.
11:20:Suicide is actually illegal in many countries around the world, but it does not seem like the punishment for attempting suicide is death. I cannot find concrete evidence that it ever was, actually.
12:54: I tried to find information on what jobs use a bell to end the work day and I couldn’t find anything! Have this part of the intro to The Flinstones about it instead.
17:18: This website has the most definitive guide to pronouncing Geraint, I’ve just decided right now.
21:21: The Pandemic has taken so much from us, not the least of which is what surely would have been the magnum opus of television history, the original fully filmed season 7 finale of The Blacklist.
24:58: The quote that I’m referring to was said by Aretha Franklin in reference to Taylor Swift. Can’t believe I mangled it that badly, but here’s the NPR review that quotes it.
26:05: You should check out our blog because we said so. Here is my concluding article on the Prisoner video game for the curious.
26:12: Be sure to check out Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast for all your obscure science-fiction television needs.
37:26: It’s called compassion fatigue and it’s actually a major problem in front-line workers right now due to COVID-19.
38:42: School shootings happen way too often to even cover adequately in the news anymore.
39:40: According to the CDC, the positive rate of Influenza testing decreased 100 fold due to mask wearing, social distancing, and other COVID prevention measures.
51:18: As always, “Ianto Jones (19 August 1983-2009) was an ex-member of the ill-fated Torchwood One and a member of Torchwood Three, initially serving as more of a “support man” or “tea boy”, but later taking a more active role in missions.”
52:06: Vera’s page on the TARDIS wiki is no better than Ianto’s in terms of outlining her achievements.
53:53: Our Back Pockets has a solid post on the history of Be gay Do Crimes.
1:02:17: Here is the exact same link I provided last week talking about the Great Leap Forward and its use and connotation with the Chinese Communist Party.

Tiggers Don’t Like Bacon
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastWe’re back. It’s the first episode of a whole new era, and Matt Smith has 20 minutes to save the world and an hour to convince the audience that there’s life after David Tennant. Pull up a fire engine and delete your browser history — it’s time for The Eleventh Hour.
Notes and links
Richard mentions Pretend It’s a City, a seven-part documentary series in which Franz Lebowitz discusses her most bracing opinions with Martin Scorsese.
Perhaps the Atraxi come from Atraxi 3, a planet first mentioned in Kate Orman and Jon Blum’s novel Vampire Science. It’s also inhabited by a a race of giant mosquitos.
Nathan mentions Neil Gaiman’s short story The Problem of Susan, which uses the character of Susan Pevensie to discuss C S Lewis’s problem with adult female sexuality in his Narnia books. Sandifer uses this short story in her analysis of why the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan fails as a character in the early years of Doctor Who.
Lynda Day is the main character of Steven Moffat’s brilliant (and occasionally problematic) children’s series Press Gang. Brilliant played by Julia Sowalha, Lynda will be eerily familiar to anyone who has watched this era of Doctor Who.
Olivia Colman talks about first becoming really famous in the first episode of David Tennant’s excellent podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast with….

#182 - Identifying With Daleks
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2In this wide-ranging Dalek-focused episode, we begin our discussion with a look at the 5-part Daleks! serial written by James Goss that is part of the Time Lord Victorious Doctor Who adventure, which is made clearer by referencing Blogtor Who's guide. We then chat about the multi-platform concept itself and what it may hold for the future of Who. A future, it would seem, that has a Doctor Who Magazine without a monthly comic serial and, perhaps, a bit searching for a new identity in these pandemic times. Ben reflects upon the TV Century 21 Daleks comic, which Goss's new story reminded him of and mentions the fan-created Second Empire Dalek comic. David brings up Pink For Your Actual Pterodactyl website's exhausivly detailed look at the History of the Pebble Mill Foyer and Ben expresses his appreciation of the site's examination of chairs in Doctor Who. Opening music is excerpted from Daleks! sound design by Steve Foxon. Closing music is "I Am A Dalek", the 1977 7" single by The Art Attacks. We recorded this episode on 9 March 2021.

Neither The Time Nor The SpaceDavid tells some tat-related porkies on "Would I Lie to Who?", Matt recounts some fajita-related marital strife, and once they've got some of the banter out of their system, they finally settle down for a chinwag about "The Woman Who Lived".
Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer, arranged by Alexander Erben.

42 to Doomsday - Up (Peri) Scope!
42 To DoomsdayEpisode 90 – Up (Peri) Scope! - We are back and once again have dragged some beauties from the archives, but this time, with a difference! We’ve put DWB and the 90’s (temporarily) on hiatus and travelled back to the late 70’s / early 80’s of Australian fandom. We focus on our northern cousins (aka the country bumpkins from Queensland) and their (sometimes extreme!) contemporary views on Season 17! Gasp at the caustic contemporary editorials ranting against Season 17, cringe at the views in the letters pages that will make you want to take a long, hot shower and grimace at a ‘unique’ retrospective on Target novels and where they went wrong! All this plus will the lads react in their usual calm manner when presented with differing views on their favourite / worst Dr Who stories and more importantly, will Mark’s latest joke ‘efforts’ help Rob break out of his writing funk! Radio Free Skaro #788 - The Revolution Is Not Being Televised

337: Religious Sonority (Categories of Life)
Trust Your DoctorNot to be confused with Religious Seniority.
It’s Categories of Life, written by Jane Espensen and aired on August 5, 2011.
Show-notes:
0:40: Seth MacFarlane created a lot of other stuff besides Family Guy. Most of it isn’t very good.
29:18: It was in Destiny of the Daleks. Thanks @Prof_Quiteamess and @lisacartman.
31:28: Shockingly, Hillary Duff is still acting in things, they’re just not good things.
32:48: Hillary Clinton also acts in things.
37:50: I guess this is a Hillary Clinton themed episode so here’s what Wikileaks gave us on that topic.
41:54: Who Killed Kennedy?
42:56: The novel Shell Shock indicates hat Peri’s stepfather Howard sexually abused her. But according to the TARDIS wiki, this has been contradicted by other material.
47:05: More on the coffee conundrum here.
52:35: We neglected to mention that the phrase “Great Leap Forward” is also associated with an entirely different totalitarian regime.
1:04:46: According to Wikipedia, Scorpion is ” [l]oosely based on the life of its executive producer and self-proclaimed computer expert Walter O’Brien.” Lol.
1:05:50: You ever check out Fargo, eh?
1:06:11: Rolling Stone reported (in 1988 lol) that in the author’s note to Libra, Don DeLillo wrote that the book was “a work of the imagination” and that “[w]hile drawing from the historical record, [he] made no attempt to furnish factual answers to any questions raised by the assassination” of Kennedy. He said the novel was instead “a way of thinking about the assassination without being constrained by half-facts or overwhelmed by possibilities, by the tide of speculation that widens with the years.”

113. Poppin' a Cap in P Cap
On the Time LashBen and Mark discuss two benevolent dictatorships as they tackle 'The Lie of the Land' and 'The Macra Terror'? Does the Monk trilogy reach a satisfying conclusion? Were British holiday camps all that bad? Under discussion: Would the Monk arc have worked better as a 12 part Netflix series? Is 'The Lie of the Land' the most overt bit of political commentary in all of Doctor Who? Is the first Troughton series one of the great under-appreciated moments in Doctor Who? Also, Ben and Mark ponder the thesis that humanity never learns from its mistakes, and discuss how 'The Macra Terror' may be more relevant than it's ever been. As ever, if you enjoy the show you can buy us a pint here
