Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 29 minutes and 36 seconds

This week's Extra! features crossover madness! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Tansy, as we muse over what it would be like to plop the Doctor into other fictional worlds. What makes a good crossover? Which Verity isn't really comfortable with crossovers? Which coins the term "Capaldi-flicted"? And which observes that Capaldi "gives good cape"? Listen and see!

Then let us know in the comments what fictional worlds you'd like to see the Doctor (and/or his companions) visit. Inquiring Verities want to know!

  • Verity! Episode 45 - Mechanical Meanies

    2 July 2014 (12:30pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 15 minutes and 14 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

It's another villaintastic episode of Verity! This time we're talking about machines--computers, robots, and androids who want to do very bad things. Join Deb, Erika, and Liz as we use "The Robots of Death" as a jumping-off point for our discussion. It's a great place to start, as it deals not only with robots themselves, but their integration into society. From there we jump to their integration into stories, and after that, we're all over the map: WOTAN! BOSS! Tara! Smilers! And much much more!

There's also a wee bit of irony at work in this ep. A technical issue prevented the excision of some coughing. (Deb had a cold.) This would be merely unfortunate, but it's catapulted into the realm of irony when Erika boasts of her cough-muting prowess...and then can't mute the coughs. Such hubris. Never tempt fate in front of the podcast gods. Lesson learned.

(That same technical issue accounts for the somewhat iffy sound quality in this ep. We thank you for your patience, and will try to have things back to normal next week!)

      • and said words that are now in Doctor Who Magazine!

  • Verity! Extra! - Verities Take Over

    25 June 2014 (12:30pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 28 minutes and 4 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

WARNING: While this episode of Verity! has no swearing, we do refer to some rather grown-up concepts, so if you usually listen with your children, you might want to take a swing through this Extra before you bring the kiddies on board--either that or fast-forward through Lynne's answer to this question.

For this Extra!, we turn to yet another silly what-if-type question. Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, Liz, and Lynne as we plan how we'd each take over the world/galaxy/universe. Which Doctor Who villains would we recruit as henchmen? What kind of evil master-plans would we employ? Would any of us stand a chance of successful conquest?

How would you go about taking over? Let us know in the comments!

On this week's episode, we begin by talking villains, but quickly discover that our topic goes far beyond them. Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Lynne as we discuss how Doctor Who has never quite recaptured the lightning-in-a-bottle that was Dalekmania. Or did it? How did merchandising factor in to subsequent villains (and non-villain characters)? What show elements do we wish had taken off more than they did?

It's another listener-participation Extra! You asked us questions. We answered! We had a lot of fun recording this one, so thanks to all the listeners who participated! If we didn't get to your question here, perhaps we will in a future Extra! You never know...

Also, Lynne would like it known that she meant to say she'd sacrifice "The Twin Dilemma" rather than "Vengeance on Varos". What would she sacrifice it for? Listen and see!

This week's ep starts with several announcements (including a contest!) and our usual Doctor Who happy-things. After that, we get down to business with a fascinating and surprisingly multi-faceted topic. Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Lynne as we talk traitors--those baddies (and occasionally goodies) who sell out their own people and side with the invaders, oppressors, and other villains. Why do they do it? What motivations are the most interesting? Which lend themselves best to scenery-chewing?

Now the usual chit-chat is out of the way, let's get on to more important things, like a CONTEST! If you want to win a copy of Paul Cornell's new novel The Severed Streets, leave us a comment below and let us know! (Personal recommendation: Do enter to win! I really enjoyed the first book, London Falling, and I can't wait to dig into this one!)

Our survey of Doctor Who baddies continues with those kings of the potato people themselves! Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we chat about Sontarans. We all rewatched "The Sontaran Stratagem" and "The Poison Sky" as a jumping-off point for this conversation, but fear not Classic Who fans, there's plenty discussion of their origins and development throughout the series (and even Big Finish)!

What do you think of these (usually) stocky, militaristic foes? Let us know in the comments!

While you're commenting, please vote! We're going to try our hands at play-along commenting. Let us know which story you think we should do. (Or let us know on Twitter using #VerityVotes.)

    • The Gunfighters
    • The Visitation
    • Black Orchid
    • Paradise Towers
    • Father's Day
    • The Curse of the Black Spot

PLUS, feel free to ask us any Doctor Who-related questions you might have. We'll start covering those in future Extras! (Again, you can also ask on Twitter, using #AskVerity.)

You had to know we'd get here sooner or later. How could one of the most iconic villain races in Doctor Who not rate their own episode? Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Lynne as we talk about the troublesome tin men. From their humble origins to their totally-different new-series origins, we touch on all the bits that make the Cyber race so fascinating to us. We may not all be "TeamCybermen" like Deb is, but they definitely have a place in each of our hearts. We even (surprise, surprise) mention Big Finish a few times, and Lynne's husband Michael makes an accidental surprise appearance talking about a subject that's very important to...well...some of us.

This week's Extra! is another fun one. Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we talk about the rabbit holes we've disappeared down because of Doctor Who. Which actors and creators have we followed from Who? What other shows have we watched because of them? Are we embarrassed by these properties? (Hint: the answer is yes.) See below for some (most?) of the shows and films we mentioned. (Note: There's some overlap between us, but I only included each link once.)
