SHOWNOTES
(00:01:30) This week’s special guest at the Diddly Dum Whoseum is Phil Cannon of the Who’s He? Podcast.
(00:07:30) “Uncle” is a rich philanthropic elephant who lives in a huge fantastical castle populated by many other eccentric animals and people. He appears in a series of children’s novels first written in 1964 by J. P. Martin and illustrated by Quentin Blake.
(00:08:10) Hayden organised a St George’s Day football match for Cancer Research UK recently. Any donations would be gratefully received. Hayden’s the one in yellow, ladies.
(00:11:24) On 24 April 2016, Diddly Dumber Matt interviewed Bob Baker at the Fab Cafe in Manchester.
(00:19:35) “Captain Kremmen” was a science fiction radio serial set in the early 21st Century. It was written and performed for Capital Radio by the DJ Kenny Everett and featured the eponymous vain and dimwitted spaceship captain. The LP which Doc converted into an MP3 was “”The Greatest Adventure Yet From Captain Kremmen” (1980).
(00:20:20) “The Adventures of Sir Prancelot” was a children’s animated television programme which followed the adventures of Sir Prancelot, an eccentric inventor-knight. It was first transmitted on BBC 1 on Thursday, 13 January 1972. The LP which Doc converted into an MP3 was “”The Adventures of Sir Prancelot” (1972).
(00:23:20) Visit our Youtube page to see The War Bungle in all his horrific glory.
(00:42:18) Choppers, the last of the chimps who were used to advertise PG Tips tea bags has sadly died.
(00:44:40) Phil has presented for exhibition in The Whoseum two Airfix Doctor Who model kits, “Welcome Aboard” and “Dalek Encounter”.

(01:08:55) Gareth Kavanagh visited The Whoseum in Diddly Dum Podcast #32.

It told the tale of Nick Stone, a former S.A.S. officer apparently blasted into a possible future by a nuclear explosion. In this future, in a neat reversal of the classic Planet of the Apes scenario, sadistic humans oppress downtrodden genetically-altered animals (called ‘Yujees’) whom they keep as slaves.
(01:35:35) Doc has presented for exhibition in The Whoseum the “Genesis of the Daleks” soundtrack LP (1978).

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 052 - When Guides Collide
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
The Four Faces of Delusion hold the inaugural meeting of the Diddly Dum Book Club by reviewing the New Adventures novel “Conundrum” (1994) by Steve Lyons. We also take advantage of the linking theme to review the Second Doctor story “The Time Robber” from 1968.Before that, Hayden looks forward to taking the TARDIS Tour at Cardiff next week while Matt reminisces about the game of Tour Guide Top Trumps which ensued when the TARDIS tour guides found out what he did for a living.
Along the way, we discover why Matt’s plan to attend a convention cosplaying as DCI Jack Meadows was frustrated; Doc explains the usefulness of “The Faraway Tree” for getting children to observe their bedtime; we learn how the root cause of all Ace’s character problems is that she’s more Morrissey fan than street fighter; and we end by asking are the days of conventions numbered?
Terrance Dicks drops in briefly to settle an argument over Spiridon and Exxilon. And we challenge politically correct censorship by asking the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything – shorts and sweaters for Enid Blyton’s kids or jeans and sweatshirts?

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 051 - Podcasters Assemble 2
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
Hayden brings us the second in his occasional series of “Podcasters Assemble” where he chats to a dazzling international array of fellow Doctor Who podcasters and tries to understand what makes them tick. This week, we hear Erika (for it is she) Ensign from the “Verity!” podcast, Marc (for it is he) Atkinson from the “Progtor Who” podcast, Christian (for it is he) Cawley from “The Podkast With a K” and Phil (for it is he) Cannon from the “Who’s He?” podcast.
You may by now have noticed that we’re pushing for the formal introduction of “(for it is s/he)” as a title for Doctor Who podcasters, the Jedi Knights of fandom. On the subject of which, we close this week’s podcast with a little tribute to another knight of the airwaves.

SHOWNOTES
(00:00:00) Our Pandemonium themed intro has been illustrated by friend of the show Simon (for it is he) Brett of the Blue Box Podcast who can claim to be one of the four original parents of the Diddly Dum Podcast. If we are the Prince Caspian of Doctor Who podcasting, just think of the Blue Boxers as Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. Simon’s Facebook page can be found here and his website is here. The summit of his broadcasting career of course came in 2014 when he visited The Whoseum in Diddly Dum Podcast 017 (“Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings”).
(00:02:04) Hayden’s first guest this week is Erika (for it is she) Ensign of the “Verity!” podcast.
(00:29:15) Hayden’s second guest this week is Marc (for it is he) Atkinson of the “Progtor Who” podcast.
(00:57:06) Hayden’s third guest this week is Christian (for it is he) Cawley of the “Podkast With a K”.
(01:21:38) Hayden’s fourth guest this week is Phil (for it is he) Cannon of the “Who’s He?” podcast.
(01:52:10) We round off this week’s podcast with a tribute to two men who have been lost to broadcasting since we recorded our last podcast. Few Doctor Who fans’ lives have not at some stage been touched by titan of the airwaves, Sir Terry Wogan. Terry encountered many stars of Doctor Who during his interviewing career and of course his years as the great helmsman of the BBC’s Children in Need. Terry interviews Colin Baker here and interviews Jon Pertwee here. “The Five Doctors” 20th anniversary special was broadcast in the UK on Children in Need night and, after the closing credits, Terry met the then current Doctor, Peter Davidson here. He met half the stars of Doctor Who during the 1985 Children in Need night here. Our musical tribute is a clip from Terry’s 1978 recording of “The Floral Dance” which reached Number 1 in the British charts. He tries to keep his face straight in this “Top of the Pops” appearance from the time. We also recently lost Ed “Stewpot” Stewart, DJ and (to Doc’s generation) presenter of “Crackerjack” (Crackerjack).

Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
The Four Faces of Delusion pick up from last week’s podcast on the TARGET novelisations by looking at the Doctor Who books published since 1989.
Being between jobs has really lit a fire under Matt who reveals that there’s little he doesn’t know about all these book ranges. This gives a well earned rest to Doc who knows bugger all about any of them.
Along the way, we learn how books kept Hayden from a life a crime and we hear of Matt’s visit to the roof of BBC Television Centre last week and meeting the great Graeme Harper while he was at it.
And of course we discuss the news that Chris Chibnall is to replace The Great Sage as showrunner.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 048 - A Happy New Year to All of You at Home
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
The Four Faces of Delusion break the podcasting fourth wall to wish all of their faithless listeners a very happy 2016 in this the delayed Christmas podcast. Our podcasting heroes talk about their Christmas presents in general and Doctor Who/Dalek annuals in particular before reviewing “The Husbands of River Song” and then looking back on Series Nine as a whole.
As is now traditional for a Diddly Dum Christmas (i.e. it happened for the first time last year), Doc dons the mantle of the great Bob Holness to test Hayden and Matt’s memory of the 2015 podcasts (follow along on the Gold Run screen above).
In a triumph of investigatory fan journalism, the Diddly Dumbers break their exclusive scoop by revealing the names of the new writing duo who Steven Moffat claims will make our brains explode. Along the way, they also discuss the outrageously un-politically-correct content of 1970s annuals, the new “Curse of the Black Spot” lego pirate ship set, Sean Pertwee’s karaoke rendition of the “Fireball XL-5” song, River Song marrying Robert Robinson and Matt rocks the world of fandom by calling for Doctor Who to be rescheduled opposite Coronation Street on Wednesday nights.

Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe Four Faces of Delusion break the podcasting fourth wall to wish all of their faithless listeners a very happy 2016 in this the delayed Christmas podcast.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 046 - Snug No More
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
The white heat of technology is called upon to save the day this week as, while Doc and Hayden sit warm in The Whoseum, poor Matt still hasn’t got away from work. So during their review of the Doctor Who episodes “Sleep No More” and “Face the Raven”, one third of the Four Faces of Delusion contributes via his phone while dashing around the former Coronation Street set putting out the lights and locking the doors, and then from the top deck of the Number 192 bus during a hair-raising journey along the A6.Along the way, we hear how Matt avoided a Judy Finnegan moment during his own Oscars moment, we cover the BBC’s 1970s child-scarer “The Changes” and its relevance even today for bringing communities together, we bemoan Doctor Who’s habit of giving us rubbish soldiers and we debate the correct plural of hiatus.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 045 - Sandmining Popcorn
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
This week, Matt has been caught in a time bubble while punting on the Irwell. What does the future hold for Hayden, alone in the Whoseum with only Pampisford Aylesbury (Doc’s Zygon double) and a wonky Time Space Visualiser for company? The surviving members of the Four Faces of Delusion nevertheless review the “Invasion of the Zygons” / “Inversion of the Zygons” two-parter.
Along the way, we discover how the “Robots of Death” is a trenchant allegory of people eating popcorn in cinemas, how Hayden in his youth used to fiddle the BBC’s ratings for Doctor Who and how the Brigadier is a more caring man in the TARGET novelisations than in the TV episodes.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 044 - Madam I'm Odin
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe Human Palindrome, Mark Cockram of the Blue Box Podcast, joins the Four Faces of Delusion to make a podcasting quartet. This week, we shake the Doctor Who world to its foundations as we compile a dossier of disloyal quotes from fans of the show pushing for a completely different approach to the show. Gasp as Russell T Davies attacks epic series arcs. Recoil as Steven Moffat demands an end to Gallifreyan back-story.
Along the way, we cover scandals so shocking that they have to be censored from the podcast. Matt tells of his disappointment at not meeting Mark Strickson despite having dressed as Vorshak from “Warriors of the Deep” specially for him, but a chance meeting with an old friend cheers him up.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 043 - If Walls Could Talk
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds
Hayden returns from his trip to New York just in time to watch both “Under the Lake” and “Before the Flood” for this week’s review show. Meanwhile, Matt employs the wonders of Skype to join us from Gareth Kavanagh’s aviary where he’s been birdsitting.
Along the way, the BBC splits the Four Faces of Delusion from One Nation into a North-South divide as we furiously debate the correct pronunciation of “Class” before going on to analyse the obvious similarities between the proposed spin-off and Sister Act. Hayden finally receives his Peter Capaldi figure and finds it a little tall. We explain the significance of Hilda’s Ogden living room in the design of the underwater base and the centrality of the astronomy of “Porridge” to the Doctor Who universe. Hayden and Matt listen in horror to tales of Doc’s A Level English Literature course.
And we even manage to find time to celebrate the clunkiest and most banal sentence in the history of Doctor Who.

(00:03:10) “The Blind Beggar” is a pub on Whitechapel Road, Whitechapel in London. The pub is known for Ronnie Kray’s murder of George Cornell. The Kray Twins were, as any Cockney will reassure you, famous for loving their mother, if not Jack “the Hat” Mcvitie.
(00:09:20) Chris Morris is an English comedian, writer, director, actor, voice actor, and producer. In the early 1990s, Morris teamed up with his radio producer, Armando Iannucci, to create On The Hour, a satire of news programmes. This was expanded into a television spin off, The Day Today, which launched the career of Steve Coogan, and has since been hailed as one of the most important satirical shows of the 1990s. Morris further developed the satirical news format with Brass Eye, which lampooned celebrities whilst focusing on themes such as crime and drugs. For many, the apotheosis of Morris’s career was a Brass Eye special, which dealt with the moral panic surrounding paedophilia. It quickly became one of the most complained about programmes in British television history, leading the Daily Mail to describe him as “the most loathed man on TV”.

It starred voice of the Daleks Roy Skelton as characters George and Zippy. The first actor to play the role of Bungle Bear was voice of K9 John Leeson. This incarnation of Bungle was so scary that generations of children have tried to wipe it from their memories which is why it has become known as The War Bungle.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 041 - Hayden's Comedy Hour

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 040 - Kevin Davies
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThis week we turn over the microphone to Hayden for a whacking big interview with Kevin (for it is he) Davies, the director and producer of “30 Years in the TARDIS”, Doctor Who’s 30th anniversary special, and “More Than…30 Years in the TARDIS”, its expanded VHS release. Kevin has also worked on features covering the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, “Blake’s 7”, the Dalekmania movies and lots more.
Join us for a roller coaster ride along the making of the anniversary special which is burned into the memories of a generation. Hear how an everyday piece of 1970s technology weighing no more than a mere house brick won a 17 year old Kevin an introduction to Douglas Adams and led to him working alongside our Hitchhiking heroes.
Gasp along with Ian Levine as Kevin unveils to the fan they can’t ban the missing 6 seconds clip from Power of the Daleks which he found. Howl with impotent rage as Kevin reveals that he keeps hidden in a secret Wigan warehouse every can of RAF Open Day film which features one of the Doctors, carefully guarding them from all eyes, waiting for what he calls “the right price” (it’s a Hitchhiker’s line, folks). Hold your breath along with us as we wait to hear if Kevin manages to effect an accidental reunion between Jennie Linden, Roberta Tovey and the man who brought dedication (it’s a Record Breakers line, folks) to the nation, the man who made the Television Centre fountain immortal, Roy Castle.

SHOWNOTES
In truth Kevin’s middle name is Jon, not “For it is He”. Kevin is of course the TV director behind “30 Years in the TARDIS” and “More Than…30 Years in the TARDIS.” But his involvement in top British cult sci-fi doesn’t stop there. He has also directed documentaries on “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and the Dalekmania movies. Kevin has made videos in which Douglas Adams explains how the animated computer graphics on the Hitchhiker’s TV series worked.
(00:31:30) Tom Baker and Frank Bough in conversation.
(00:43:30) Craig Ferguson in his earlier incarnation as Bing Hitler.
(01:14:25) In September 1965, First Doctor William Hartnell visited RAF Finningley in Yorkshire as part of the Battle of Britain Open Day.
(01:21:00) The surviving Dalek clips from “Power of the Daleks”.
(01:32:50) To Doctor Who fans, Roy Castle is probably best known as the actor who played Ian in the 1965 Peter Cuushing film “Doctor Who and the Daleks“. But to those of Kevin’s and Doc’s generation (cue sound effect of zimmer frames), Roy was a titan of BBC entertainment, especially children’s entertainment. He hosted “Record Breakers” for over 20 years, a show whose most memorable moment for a whole generation was the breaking of the world record for the largest tap dance which took place around the fountain at the heart of BBC Television Centre.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 039 - Three Angry Men
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThere is a grumpiness in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood, leads on to podcasting.
It had to happen one day. By sheer coincidence, life and work had been rough on all three members of the Four Faces of Delusion this week, brewing a cocktail which brought together Doc, Hayden and Matt in equally grumpy moods to record this podcast.
We start with Matt’s report on his recent visit to the “Day of the Doctors 2” event where he actually got offered a jelly baby by the great man himself, witnessed Sylvester McCoy getting his mojo back, heard a story which forever trumps Matthew Waterhouse’s anecdote of finding out that he’d been written out, and Matt splashes the cash in the dealers’ room. Then Doc tells of the parcel of goodies he received which left him thoroughly mystified for a good five minutes and Hayden whores himself out on eBay to part-fund a trip to the USA.
We look at the rumours of an incomplete season in 2016 and reveal the identity of the actress destined to play the Thirteenth Doctor.
In the second half of the show, we give full rein to our grumpiness by building on last time’s “Guilty Treasures” – but this time it’s Guilty Hates. Luckily, the grumpiness of each podcaster’s choice provokes passionate defences by the other two. You haven’t heard this much passion on Diddly Dum since the week Doc did his 20 minute rant about fan forums.
Along the way, we preview the future Big Finish collections – “The Duggan Chronicles” and “The Neeva Chronicles”.

DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 036 - The Human Palindrome
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 secondsThe Four Faces of Delusion become five as we complete our set of Blue Box Podcasters by welcoming Mark Cockram to the Diddly Dum Whoseum.
Mark has brought along a number of items which are redolent for him of a life with the Doctor. From Jon Pertwee’s “Who is the Doctor” single to the Graham Williams era via Loose Cannon reconstructions. As for the man who stopped Tom Baker on Oxford Street and told him about his childhood in a care home, Mark’s own tale of his primary school Tom Baker trauma knocks that into a cocked hat.
Along the way, we toast absent friends in the finest vintage of Dandelion & Burdock while extrapolating the succession of Doctors we might have had if the late Ron Moody had succeeded Patrick Troughton – William Hartnell, Pat Troughton, Ron Moody, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Christopher Lee in cricket whites. We discover that Hayden’s great-grandfather was the first person ever to sell Ford motor cars…(listen in to hear the end of that sentence). We also hear of Mark’s memories of seeing Matthew Waterhouse in a stage production of Treasure Island and the role of “Inherit the Wind” in the Cockram family acquiring their first VCR.

Deep within the disused World War Two pedalo pens on Diddly Dum Island lurks a familar shape. A full-sized Lego replica of Stingray waiting to take our podcasting heroes on a global tour of Doctor Who’s underwater story locations.
Gasp as you visit with us the ruins of ancient Atlantis. Thrill as we’re chased along the beach outside HMS Seaspite by angry Lego executives. Shudder as we enter a pitched battle with the Merkyr. Blanch as we milk the Skarasen for lactic fluid for our tea.
Along the way, we reveal the links between Seabase Four and TV game show 3-2-1, and we explain the importance of ankles in an underwater environment. Only on Diddly Dum.

Thrill as we’re chased along the beach outside HMS Seaspite by angry Lego executives. Shudder as we enter a pitched battle with the Myrka. Blanch as we milk the Skarasen for lactic fluid for our tea. SHOWNOTES
Lots of memories of Longleat 1983 can be found on the splendid “O.L.G. Doctor Who Pages” here and here and here.
Hayden’s first guest is Lee Rawlings, he of the Blue Box Podcast and tormentor of JR Southall.
Lee is one of the eminences grise(s)? behind the revival of the Cygnus Alpha fanzine. But the original incarnation (iteration?) of the fanzine was alive and well in 1983 and reporting on Longleat as can be seen from these pieces. They are also reproduced on the “Doctor Who at Longleat” Facebook page.
“Seasons of War” is the unofficial Doctor Who charity anthology.
Hayden’s second guest is Jamie Wells.
Here are two of Phil photos from the day he starred in “Dimensions in Time”, the 1993 Doctor Who/Eastenders crossover special which marked the show’s 30th anniversary. And here is Phil himself in costume sitting on a bin.
Here is surviving footage of the auction and here is captured the moment that Jon Pertwee thwarted Ian Levine’s auction plans.
“Breakfast Time” interview with Pat Troughton and Peter Davison.
Hayden’s fourth guest is Tony Jordan.
Tom Baker’s panel at Longleat.
