SHOWNOTES
(00:00:00) Dez Skinn is a British comic and magazine editor and author of a number of books on comics. As head of Marvel Comics’ operations in the UK in the late 1970s, Dez reformatted existing titles, launched new ones, and acquired the BBC license for “Doctor Who Weekly”. After leaving Marvel UK, Dez founded and edited “Warrior”, which featured key works by Alan Moore. Called by some the “British Stan Lee”, Dez is one of British comics’ most influential figures (it says here). Dez’s website can be found here.

Audio 19: The Waking Dead (Phantasmagoria: Revisited)
Trust Your DoctorAlternate title: Hell Yeah, Mark Strickson! We were less enthusiastic about old Mark after we learned he was maybe possibly theoretically hypothetically a redhead, but also not one at the same time. Got give it up to him though. He was pretty fantastic in this story. Or should I say phantastic, with a “ph?” Probably not because it’s not spelled with a “ph,” but what is spelled with a “ph” is Phantasmagoria, written by Mark Gatiss and released on October 4, 1999.
Show-notes:
1:00: I suppose the cover is kind of orangey.
1:20: I dunno here’s a picture of Mark Strickson, decide for yourself what color his hair is. (Editor’s note: It’s chartreuse.)
2:45: This was the optical illusion I was talking about, courtesy of the Washington Post. I guess they had nothing better to report on or something. Anyway, I if you put your finger between A and B in the image, you’ll see that they’re the same color. That’s what I meant to say on recording. Here’s a bunch of similar illusions from the Washington Post.
3:28: Here’s our first attempt at this episode from like 5 years ago if you’d like to listen to it. I’m not going to.
6:35: Behold: stories set in 1702.
9:23: Here’s the wikipedia page on Almanac that Kiyan couldn’t find in a reasonable time span.
15:08: The Visitation is set in 1666.
19:28: Apparently it was true.
23:37: Check out our classic sci-fi podcast, Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast.
55:30: It’s Day of the Doctor that Kiyan is referring to here.
1:02:02 The P.R.O.B.E. videos are actually about Liz Shaw, they don’t even pretend it’s not, because of how rights worked. Also, if you know how/why P.R.O.B.E. stands for “Preternatural Research Bureau,” let us know, cause we’re stumped.
1:06:38 Seven Keys to Doomsday is an audio adaptation of a stage play.
1:07:50 The name of JB’s current Doctor Who podcast, if you weren’t aware, is Doctor Who Gives a F*ck.

Episode 25 - The Space War (with Daniel Knight)
Doctor Who LiteratureBREAKING NEWS! Ncuti Gatwa is the new Doctor Who!! ... but this episode was recorded and edited before the announcement, so join me on Trap One later in the week for a deeper analysis.
Welcome to the 25th episode of Doctor Who Literature -- this week is the 49th anniversary of Target's first Doctor Who book releases, and now we're reading their 25th published novelization, "Doctor Who and the Space War", published in September 1976. My guest this week is Daniel Knight, and we discuss the history of TV production in the US, Star Trek, what makes the definitive Malcolm Hulke novelization, and what other Doctor Who podcasts might also be tackling "Frontier in Space" this week.
Daniel joins us for a game of "Guess That Cliffhanger". Can anything in the world stop him now?In the second half, Jason does a close reading of the text. Is this an improvement on the TV story, or perhaps a slight diminution?
The episode features a brief musical cue from The Beastie Boys for Mothers' Day. No copyright infringement is intended.

River Knows All the Space Reasons
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast“Tell her, this is the story of Amelia Pond. And this is how it ends.”
Amelia Williams
Many of us grow up: we live in a real world of marriages and families, jobs and mortgages. But some of us can never bring ourselves to leave our imaginary friend behind. Can you imagine the leaden apprehension when we learn that the choice has been taken from us forever? Kevin Burnard joins us for The Angels Take Manhattan.
Notes and Links
It doesn’t take us long to mention that the Doctor is carrying the Target novelisation of this story around in his jacket. (“How does anything get there? I’ve given up asking.”) Steven Moffat’s one Target novelisation is his brilliant version of The Day of the Doctor. Worth a read.
Nathan has checked, and upsettingly there isn’t a chapter in the Doctor’s Melody Malone book called Escape to Danger, which sets it apart from a large number of Doctor Who novelisations.
Simon compares the experience of watching this story to the experience of watching the Star Trek: The Next Generation series finale All Good Things…. Of course, if you want to listen to Nathan and Joe Ford’s experience of watching All Good Things…, take a listen to their commentary in Untitled Star Trek Project, episode 18.
The Doctor’s plan to nip back in time to get the ceramicist to paint the word yowza on a Qin Dynasty vase was apparently inspired by Professor Chronotis, who pulls a similar trick between paragraphs in Douglas Adams’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.
And Rory gets to say a final farewell to his father Brian in a scene released by the BBC in 2012. You can find it here.

A Song of Ice and Fire
The Doctor Who PodcastHello all you wonderful listeners!
With the imminent return (well, in six months time of Ace to Doctor Who, James and Drew follow the Yellow Brick Road where we first met Dorothy McShane in 1987 – and Dragonfire! Has it stood the test of time?
Before we find out, the guys take advantage of recording together for the first time in ages and basically, yabber about Doctor Who for 15 mins. Sanity is then restored in the form of Ian who presents the finale of our Nine Lives series. Looking back as Series 1 has been quite a journey and it’s not without a tear that James and Ian review The Parting of The Ways.
Join us shortly for Episode 343 – if the (totally baseless) rumours are to be believed, we may have some rather exciting casting news to discuss! If we don’t, then we’ll have a in-depth critical analysis of Delta of the Bannerman instead. You are of course, Most Welcome.
Enjoy the show.

Podcastica Episode 253: Four to Doomsday OR Do Androids Dream of Overthrowing Tyrants?
PodcasticaFOUR TO DOOMSDAY! If the story Kinda has been our standard for bonkers episodes for years, it only stands to reason that the episode right before it is pretty bonkers, too. Right?! Well, imagine our TARDIS team encountering a race of frog-esque people who can download your whole self into some circuitry, build an android replica of yourself, and put you to work on their massive ship...because their leader effectively wants to travel faster than light, sending himself back in time to meet...maybe himself?! Oh it's a wild ride with some interesting characterizations this time with Four to Doomsday!

2MTL 469: TIME DILATION: The Streaming Future of Doctor Who
Two-minute Time LordJason Snell, co-host of Downstream on Relay FM and head of The Incomparable network of pop culture podcasts, joins me for a look at Doctor Who's future in a world where TV networks struggle to stay relevant and Netflix is losing a bunch of subscribers. The conversation is a "follow-out" from recent discussions on Radio Free Skaro. (Apologies to Jason because I overprocessed his audio.)

Episode 24 - The Web of Fear (with Bill Evenson)
Doctor Who LiteratureWhen Bill Evenson is in the house, anything can happen on the podcast. Today we discuss The Web of Fear, the TV episodes (four of the six of which were famously rediscovered and released in 2013), and the 1976 Terrance Dicks novelization. But we also discuss Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, Mel Brooks, alcohol, the LAX Marriott and Doctor Who convention dealers' rooms, and... more alcohol. Also, one of us can't tell the difference between Rod Steiger and Roy Staiger, but both of us agree that baseball is no substitute for Doctor Who.
Bill is a prodigious talent. You can hear him on just about every episode of Reality Bomb, read him (with co-author, and friend of the program, Stacey Smith?) in Look At The Size of That Thing (never mind the cover art), and hear even more of him as co-host of the Frankenstein Minute podcast.I previously interviewed Bill (and Stacey Smith?) on an episode of Trap One in 2021.
This episode features musical excerpts from the incredible vocal talents of Patti LuPone from the US TV series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend", and from the film soundtrack of Fiddler on the Roof.
The new documentary Fiddler's Journey to the Big Screen is still playing in Manhattan as this episode releases, and will be touring North America throughout spring 2022. I have no involvement with the film or filmmakers, and its relation to "The Web of Fear" is of course strictly tangential. At best.

Audio 18: Cheesegrating Yourself (The Sirens of Time)
Trust Your DoctorNothing more grating than a cheese grater, especially when you’re using it to grate yourself. Going to town with it on your own body. Turning yourself into a bloody pulp if you know what I’m saying. Tearing your flesh to shreds if you catch my drift. Permanently maiming yourself in the most hideous and painful way possible if you get my meaning. The grating halt to which our enjoyment of this audio came in the story’s fourth part is pretty high up there on the gratingness scale too though, I guess. It’s The Sirens of Time, written by Nicholas Briggs and released on July 19, 1999
Show-notes:
2:03: When you remember that Tom Baker actually created Slender Man.
7:04: For the love of god, don’t listen to our episode on The Airzone Solution.
8:30: I’ll just link the page for this audio on the Big Finish site so you can see the cover of this audio.
15:30: Know Your Meme has details on the “reaction guys” meme. Here’s the 2014 reunion as a side-by-side comparison.
16:46: Sigh, something something TARDIS wiki something something artron energy.
24:35: Check out Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast, our classic sci-fi podcast.
42:15: Here’s a pretty decent page on whether or not viruses are alive (it’s up for debate) and how they differ from other lifeforms. I think when most people think “virus,” they’re thinking of bacteriophages, which look like microscopic robots. These things attack bacteria and are supposedly one of the deadliest beings on Earth. Luckily, they’re completely harmless to humans.
1:08:53: Here’s a sneak peek at what we’re covering next week, courtesy of the TARDIS wiki.
