Trapped in a futuristic dystopia run by crazed B-grade reality television stars, Brendan, Nathan and Todd attempt to take their mind off things by watching the remarkably vengeance-free Vengeance of Varos.

Vengeance of Varos was originally released very early on: in 2001 in the UK, in 2002 in Australia, and in 2003 in the US. Mercifully, a special edition of the story was released in 2012. (Amazon US) (Amazon UK)

Notes and links

Todd draws a deft comparison between this story and Gogglebox, a television programme on Channel 4 in which we get to watch various households watching various other television programmes. There’s an Australian version as well.

In Australia, this season of 45-minute episodes was broadcast in a 25-minute timeslot, which led to some horrifically bad cliffhangers. The worst of these will be horribly evident next week.

Nigel Kneale, creator of Quatermass and conservative grandpa angry about the way the nurses keep moving his pills, was the creator of The Year of the Sex Olympics, which depicts a future where the elites pacify the population with a steady diet of violence, pornography and reality television.

Owen Teale plays Maldak in this story, a guard with a truly regrettable 80s hairstyle. He will go on to appear in the Torchwood episode Countrycide, and in a popular television programme called Game of Thrones, which Nathan has never even heard of.

Despite his performance in this story, Jason Connery will go on to have a distinguished acting career. He stars in Robin of Sherwood Season 3 as fake replacement Robin Hood after the original Robin leaves the show/is shot to death by arrows. He also plays Ian Fleming in Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming (1990).

It’s with great sadness that we say goodbye to Sir John Hurt who passed away aged 77. As Who fans we knew him as the War Doctor but he had a wonderful career playing some wonderful roles over the years, namely The Elephant Man, Kane (and the awesome/horrific chest busting scene) in Alien and Mr Olivander in Harry Potter. Good bye old bean.

Big Finish has picked up a BBC Drama Award! The award for Best Online/non Broadcast Drama was for Absent Friends, part one from Doom Coalition 3 boxset. Well done indeed!

More sad news, Peter Capaldi has announced his departure from Who in an emotional interview with Jo Whiley on her BBC Radio 2 show. As you can imagine, we have quite a few words to say about this.

It's a jam-packed and bittersweet edition of the MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast this week! Our friend Kayti Burt joins us to talk all about SHERLOCK, as we discuss her great ranking of the show's episodes, from worst to best, that she did for Collider.com (Link HERE ). We've been trying to have her on for a couple of weeks, and we finally solved our usual tech issues to get her on the podcast! HOWEVER...

In the interim from our original recording date to the actual date, several sad occurrences of various forms have happened:

1. Peter Capaldi has announced that he's leaving DOCTOR WHO after the Christmas 2017 episode (Same time that Steven Moffat departs). We discuss his decision and talk about some of our favorites for #13.

2. Even more sad is the news of the passing of the War Doctor, SIR JOHN HURT. We talk of his significance to all of WHO fandom as well as each of us individually (Especially John, as Sir John in many ways led him into Whovian fandom). We discuss the great privilege that John & I had of meeting him and interacting last year at Gallifrey One.

SO - that leads to a 2 hour episode, but one that I think is one of our very best (and easily broken up into shorter chunks).

As a bonus, you'll hear Sir John himself, doing 2 of WHO's most famous speeches: William Hartnell's farewell to Susan from "Dalek Invasion of Earth" (and "The Five Doctors") AND the 12th Doctor's exquisite speech from "The Zygon Inversion".
