Epsiode 229: talking comedy
The Bad Wilf PodcastMartyn, Chris, and Sam are back. This week, they’re talking comedy. But what exactly is comedy and, who decides what’s funny?
The dictionary describes comedy as;
“professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches, intended to make an audience laugh.”
But, is that an accurate or relevant description? Your dynamic trio discusses their favourite comedians/influences, such as Lee Evans, Robin Williams, Paul Whitehouse, Shappi Khorsandi and, Dave Chappelle.
They also talk about “cancel culture” and ask questions such as “should it be one rule for comedians and one rule for everyone else?” and “what role should context play when telling a joke?”
The intro is taking from Dave Chappelle’s 2019 Netflix special ‘sticks & stones’.

Episode 228 - The Rings of Akhaten Things I Hate About You
Doctor Who: Verity!Time for another bit of hindsight. Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we discuss Deb's modern Who pick to look back at, "The Rings of Akhaten". Fandom really hates this one. And we (mostly) didn't love it the first time around. Do we now? Have we grown souls (according to Liz)? Listen and see!
Have you revisited this story recently? If so, what did you think, and how did that compare with how you felt about it in the first place? And how do you think this story compares to "Vincent and the Doctor"? Let us know in the comments!
^E
Happy things:
- Liz looks forward to Big Finish's Time Lord Victorious audios!
- Tansy is enjoying AcornTV for British shows with Doctor Who actors!
- Erika and Deb were both pleased with the "turnout" for the #DoctorWhoBlackout Tweet-along and all the money raised for Black Lives Matter causes!
- Deb also enjoyed the Doctor Who Lockdown Longsong!

Following them through the barrier in search of a missing friend, they find themselves many years into the future, when over-population has brought the Earth to its knees. TDP 944: Timeslip Volume 02: The War That Never Was from @BigFinish
Tin Dog PodcastThis title was released in June 2020. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until July 31st 2020, and on general sale after this date. Escaping from the future, our heroes find themselves in the distant past... sort of. It’s 1953, but a very different 1953 from the one we’re used to. The UK has still not recovered from a second World War that lasted an extra year longer than in our history. The Americans had to step in to save the besieged country, dropping another Atom Bomb on Berlin. They are now running the grateful UK as if it is part of the US and are now expanding their empire against the growing might of the Soviet Union. The Time Barrier has been discovered and is being studied by a team of scientists, whilst strange items are being smuggled through from different time periods - weapons perhaps, traded with the future? Spivs and racketeers run the streets, and the US Government plan highways through time... And behind it all is a very familiar face.

Redux 5: Sea Devil’s Advocate (Warriors of the Deep)
Trust Your DoctorCan’t wait to see all of the Sea Devil photoshops we’ll get out of this.
I find it interesting that in reality the Silurians are the ones in charge of this story, completely and utterly. But while they may be the ones in control, they aren’t the ones who lend their name to the title of the story. The Sea Devils don’t really do anything except show up and cap a bunch of fools, and then they just kind of… die. And yet somehow the story is named after them? It’s Warriors of the Deep, written by Johnny Byrne and aired between January 5th and 13th , 1984.

Why He Wins
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, all four of us gather in the Console Room to tow the podcast home after a particularly trying week. It’s time for our journey to end, in — er — Journey’s End.
Notes and links
Perennial FTE punching bag Dodo Chaplet contracts syphilis — or at least an alien sex virus — in Daniel O’Mahony’s Virgin Missing Adventure The Man in the Velvet Mask.
During the Doctor’s year off in 2009, the 456 arrive on Earth to kidnap millions of children and are thwarted by Torchwood, without the assistance of Martha or Mickey. Despite this, Children of Earth is just about the best thing produced in Doctor Who’s modern era. If you haven’t seen it, you definitely should.
After the traditional transporter accident, Troi finds herself with two Will Rikers in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Second Chances, and somehow fails to take the obvious course of action.
Picks of the week
James
James wants you to watch The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, which is episodes 5 and 6 of Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and which includes the last scenes David Tennant filmed at the Doctor before his final regular episodes were broadcast at the end of 2009. It features the Trickster and Nigel Havers, only one of whom is trying to marry Sarah.
Peter
Peter recommends War of the Worlds, a Fox co-production from 2019, which features Ty Tennant, the son of Georgia and David Tennant, previously seen in his grandfather’s Doctor Who fiftieth anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.
Todd
Todd wants to take us a bit highbrow this week, with the sensational Netflix series, Tiger King, which for many of us was the way we celebrated the beginning of our endless COVID lockdown. Very much worth a look.
Nathan
Taking the opportunity to retreat into his own childhood, Nathan suggests that you read Tove Jansson’s Moomin books, which range from charming and whimsical to elegiac and character-driven. Recommended.

Follow us
Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood, Todd is @toddbeilby, and Peter is nowhere at all. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam, and the strings performance was by Jane Aubourg. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast.
We’re also on Facebook, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on iTunes, or we’ll rudely push your ex-girlfriend across the room in an unsubtle attempt to hit on your ex-boyfriend. You really have quite the complicated love life, don’t you?
And more
You can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found.
Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well. In our most recent episode, we again commemorate Honor Blackman by watching her appearance as Ronald Allen’s wife in an episode of Patrick McGoohan’s Danger Man called Colonel Rodriguez.

Episode 23: Inferno Episode 5: The Eruption Division
Doctor Who: Fifty Years AgoThe morals are wobbly and grey, as is the concept of soldiers, heroes and bureaucrats. We recognise when the rules can be broken, deify those who do and vilify those who don't, a humanisation of soldiers. The environment also gets a mention as it threatens to consume us all, very quickly in the story, very slowly in reality.
