Often regarded as one of the worst classic stories, is it that bad? We take a look at the 6th Doctor’s first outing from strangling companions to galactic slugs, all wrapped up in a brand new colourful outfit. Do we consider this story a work of genius or do we feel trapped, watching it in a slug-trail of cement?

Blake’s 7 is often paired with classic Who as it was written by Terry Nation and Gareth Thomas himself is connected to Who by way of starring in Torchwood and Big Finish.

It’s a comics week as Titan launch the new 9th Doctor range and they’ve also announced a new Torchwood run that will start this July, written by Captain Jack John Barrowman and Carole E. Barrowman.
“The Vampires of Venice” Review
Blood sucking vampires, creepy setting and marital tiffs. Does Toby Whithouse’s script deliver a scary enough story or do we feel like we’ve been smacked in the face with a blue-lobster-pointy fish, thing? Our review scores await.

Who would have thought Series 1 from new Who would be so popular? BBC Worldwide have revealed that at their trade even Showtime, Doctor Who: Series 1 is the most purchased show for broadcast worldwide. Go 9 and Rose!
Sad news now. Actor Jon Rollason who played journalist Harold Chorley in the Troughton story The Web of Fear has passed away, aged 84. Involved in various TV projects including The Avengers and Coronation Street, we’ll remember him as the cowardly and often pushy Mr Chorley.
With lots of mud slinging going on with Netflix at the moment and their imminent withdrawal of Who from it’s service, we have good news for our Canadian friends. Streaming service CraveTV have picked up the contract to show Who later this year. Starting with Series 9 after in broadcasts on Space, all previous 8 series’ will then be added by the end of the year. Some good news at least for some fans.

Titan Comics have announced the date for this year’s Doctor Who Comics Day. That day is Saturday 9th July which is sure to see some events happening all over the place. Last year there was a good event held at Forbidden Planet in London so we’re expecting a similar thing. Go Titan!
According to new figures from the BBC, Doctor Who has come fourth in the top ten most loved show on iPlayer. Yes, apparently there’s a favourite/love/whatever icon within iPlayer which Who fans clearly have been pressing quite a bit. Must remember to do that now.
If you’re heading to the Doctor Who Experience soon you’re in for a treat as a load of new props and other goodies from series 9 are being added for our up-close viewing pleasure. These will be on show from Wednesday 2nd March and if that wasn’t enough, the Tardis Tours are back! Yes, from Saturday 20th February through to Sunday 6th March you’ll be able to set foot on the iconic Tardis set and be like the actual Doctor! Now would be a good time to get your asses to Cardiff.
“The War Machines” Review
We’re visiting the 1st Doctor and those lethal robots in all it’s black and white glory this week. We have a lot of love for Mr Hartnell but does this story stand up in quality to his greatness or are we left to wonder 60’s London, wishing we were back in full colour?

Steven Moffat has bagged himself an OBE! Yes, still current show runner was given the award in this years honours for his services to drama and we think it’s thoroughly deserved. We may not have agreed with or liked all of Moffat’s decisions during his time as head writer but you can’t argue with his tireless dedication and work ethic.
You may remember a couple of weeks ago we told you about a Kickstarter project to bring the classic Doctor Who pinball machine into a digital format. Well, it’s not reached 100% of it’s funding goal, woo-hoo! Awesome job to those who backed this, we can’t wait to play it.
Series 10 is underway! Yes, pre-production is getting into motion and filming begins this May. It’s good to know that things are still happening and they’re nearly into filming, here’s looking forward to those official pics from the production team.
“42” Review
Series 3 is generally considered pretty good but this story is often overlooked. Claustrophobic, suspense and eery possession make this an interesting concept plus it’s well times as it was Chris Chibnall’s first story for Who. Are we impressed or running from the sun with this one?

BBC Books are to re-issue seven of the old Target novelisations; Doctor Who and the Zarbi by Bill Strutton (First Doctor); Doctor Who and the Web of Fear by Terrance Dicks (Second Doctor); Doctor Who and the Dinosaur Invasion by Malcolm Hulke (Third Doctor); Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks by Terrance Dicks (Fourth Doctor); Doctor Who: The Visitation by Eric Saward (Fifth Doctor); Doctor Who: Vengeance on Varos by Philip Martin (Sixth Doctor) and Doctor Who: Battlefield by Marc Platt (Seventh Doctor). Looking forward to these as they’re always good reads.
Comic book creator and producer Andrew Wildman has put out some story board cards of when he was working on the Day of the Doctor and it shows some scenes including 9th Doctor Chris Eccleston. Some interesting scenes with him in the barn on Gallifrey with a young girl now known as The Moment along with some other expressions. John Hurt was awesome as the War Doctor but we can’t help think what the story would be like with Eccleston instead?
“Delta and the Bannermen” Review
It’s a bit of a bonkers review this one as we take a trip to Shangri-la holiday camp with the 7th Doctor and Mel. Cameos, green babies, Welsh holiday-ers, rock ‘n roll and dodgy American accents. Are we swept up in the 50’s nostalgia or does this story leave us broke down like the holiday bus?
That’s it for this week. If you’ve not yet watched Delta and the Bannermen it’s worth a go for the entertainment value alone. Next week we visit the Tennant era and review 42, written by new showrunner Chris Chibnall. Until then – Allons-y!

Hey Who fans! Big big news this week but before that the obligatory waffle then later our review of series 1’s Dalek.
The News
Mr Capaldi has been busy the last week, not with Who but with more real life problems and stories. Taking time out from his schedule he made a trip to Jordan to visit some of the refugee camps and see the tragedy there. A very touching video is online featuring Capaldi himself and his experiences there. All respect to Capaldi.
A new Kickstarter campaign started recently which is sure to please any retro pinball machine fans. Video game developers Farsight Studios, who specialise in taking actual classic pinball machines and digitising them to play on computers and consoles, have acquired a classic Doctor Who pinball machine but need help in getting the required licensing to bring it to market. Check out their campaign on Kickstarter and give it a backing if you want to get hold of this awesome bit of Doctor Who gaming nostalgia.
BIG NEWS! As you will all be aware – Stephen Moffat has announced he’ll be stepping down as show runner next year and will be replaced by previous Who writer and creator of the brilliant Broadchurch Chris Chibnall. Moffat will be with us for one more series after this years Christmas Special and then Chibnall with take over from 2018. This does leave a gap in broadcast unfortunately as we’re getting no new Who until Christmas this year, sad face. We’ve got lots to discuss on this and we’d like your comments too so let us know.
“Dalek” Review
Fantastic! We’re back in 2005 this week and witness the Dalek’s on our screen for the first time in modern Who and for quite a while previously. Can a lone, menacing Dalek and a petrified Doctor create enough of a story to keep us in suspense or does this one crash down a flight of stairs like a Dalek with a faulty levitate?

Series 9 picks up a Golden Tomato Award. Movie and TV review site Rotten Tomatoes has awarded series 9 the most reviewed show, smashing!
Russell T Davies has picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Writing Award at the prestigious annual Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards. He was thrilled to be receiving an award from fellow writers and praises the Writers’ Guild for it’s good work. Nice job RTD.
Sad news now. The creator of the Zygons Robert Banks Stewart has passed away at the age of 84. After a successful career writing scripts for a number of television shows he’ll be remembered by Who fans as the creator of the Zygons but also penning the brilliant story The Seeds of Doom, bringing us the Krynoid no less!
“The Brain of Morbius” Review
Back now to the 4th Doctor era with our review of this Frankenstein-esque tale. The Doctor and Sarah Jane are in trouble again but who is trying to kill them off, the Sisterhood of Karn or Solon? Are we huge fans of this one or do we loose our heads?

The News
The new spin-off show which is due to air this Autumn is now to be co-produced by BBC America. While originally going to be produced solely by BBC Wales as per the regular show, this is now being made (and also broadcast) with our friends across the pond.
The ever child like 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy is to check-in to the real life Marigold Hotel. A new documentary on BBC 2 later this month will record the antics of a bunch of senior citizens as they embark on a long holiday to India to see if this is the retirement life for them. Cue much larking about and spoon playing!
“The God Complex” Review
We take a trip back to series 6 now and pull out one of the isolated stories. Themes of faith, fear and goodbyes test the team of The Doctor, Amy and Rory but how do we feel about it? A worthy re-watch or is it best left in room 11?

Colin Baker’s usual brash-self is always under scrutiny but how does the story stack up for us? Do we drown in the monster-infested pools on Necros or do we strut proudly in our fancy blue cloak?

We conclude 2015 with our review of The End of Time Part 2. David Tennant’s final episode literally goes out with a bang. Does it match Part 1’s action and emotion? Who are we kidding, of course it does, but do our review scores reflect it’s rollercoaster of emotions?

The BBC have recently made the scripts available for the last two episode of series 9 Heaven Sent and Hell Bent. If you want an insight into what makes the foundation for an episode of Doctor Who then they’re worth a read.
Next week’s Christmas Special the Husbands of River Song have had the broadcast times revealed and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Here in the UK we’re fortunate to get it first at 5:15pm on Christmas Day, followed by our friends in the US and Canada later that day. Other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and some parts of Europe will have to wait until Boxing Day.
Those clever peeps over at Rubbertoe Replicas have given us a detailed close up of the new Sonic Screwdriver to be used by Peter Capaldi. It looks wonderful and I think will all be on our Christmas lists next year. If you can afford it that is!
“The End of Time – Part 1” Review
It’s been a long time coming but Garry has been wanted to chew the fat on this one with Adam for a while. Tennant’s last story is packed full of action, humour and sadness and it’s these things that often divide fans. What do we make of it though… RTD magic or epic failure?

The News
First up a great story. Martyn over at the BadWilf podcast along with the Geeksyndicate website started a campaign for a very sick Doctor Who fan called Daniel who wanted to go to the Festival last month but was too ill to attend. Using the hashtag #drwhodaniel they got the story trending and Daniel started receiving visits from cast members. Firstly it was Madame Kovarian Frances Barber which brought a smile to his face and now the Doctor himself Peter Capaldi has dropped by. Along with his visits he’s received plenty of Who stuff from various blogs/sites/podcasters which we’ll be adding to by sending a copy of the just released Whoniverse book by Lance Parkin.
Fans of the 9th Doctor 5-issue mini-series from Titan Comics will glad to hear that starting April 2016 he’ll be getting a permanent run along side the current Doctor comics. Fantastic!
If you’ve been liking the appearances of Ashildr this series you’ll be pleased to know BBC Books have just released The Legends of Ashildr in hardback. Based on her journals it’s a collection of stories from some pretty good authors including James Goss. Look out for it on Amazon, The BBC Shop and most other book stockists.
“Hell Bent” Review
We’re expecting a big show from the series 9 finale after the amazing cliff hanger from last week’s Heaven Sent. Does this impress like we hoped or leave us drowning in a puddle of Moffat-filled disappointment?

The News
A potentially confirming video has been posted by Peter Jackson on his Facebook page featuring Peter Capaldi in character as the Doctor. After years of rumours that Jackson would be directing an episode of Who it looks like it may be happening which would be amazing as we’re big fans of Jackson’s work. It’s a great video so check it out if you can.
The TARDIS set tours are returning to the Doctor Who Experience. From the 3rd December you’ll be able to purchase the official BBC set tour along with your regular Experience ticket. Looking forward to visiting the actual TARDIS set used by 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi? Let us know if you end up going and give us your reviews.
The BBC have released the title and a promo image for this years Christmas Special. Titled The Husbands of River Song it will air on Christmas Day at the more traditional “tea time” slot of 5:15pm. The promo image doesn’t reveal much by way of the story but it does throw in a classic looking River, a potentially new Sonic Screwdriver (oooh!) and a strange headless robot. Another Christmas flop or an entertaining romp?
“Heaven Sent” Review
We’re well on the way to the series end now and the Doctor is really up against the ropes. Isolated and trying to figure out where he is, who did this to him and how to escape. Does this Doctor-solo episode of dark inflection make us revel in the Moffat brilliance or is it a gruesome mess?

This week sees Doctor Who celebrate 52 years of broadcasting. It only feels like yesterday we were all celebrating the 50th anniversary which is crazy but overall what a massive achievement by all involved over the years bringing us Who. Here’s to many more years.
Some casting news – Matt Lucas of Little Britain fame and Greg Davies from the Inbetweeners have been cast for this year’s Christmas Special. It’s been hit and miss with predominantly comedic actors seen in Who (Peter Kay maybe?) so we shall see how this goes. Fingers crossed!

“Face the Raven” Review
It was always going to be a sad one as we say goodbye to Clara and the Doctor is left alone once more. This episode also saw the return of Ashilda as the meddling immortal but now she’s gone and done it! Does this leave us wanting more and wanting Clara back or are we up for a bit of companion change?

Big Finish have released boxset images for John Hurt’s War Doctor first adventure Only the Monstrous which you can also pre-order now for PS20. We suspect this one may be rather good so definitely a pre-order set.
“Sleep No More” Review
It’s always risky with Doctor Who when you try new things as we all found out with the Marmite episode Love and Monsters but is it a good thing that Mark Gatiss try’s out the now often sniffed at found footage approach? We think you’ll find our review of this one interesting and if someone finds this podcast many years in the future, we’re sure you’ll understand.

If you’ve ever wanted to own Doctor Who digitally you can now do so through the BBC new digital download store The BBC Store. All of the newer Who stuff is on there and the majority of the classic stuff too. Don’t forget about your humble DVD collection though!
Steven Moffat has signed up to produce at least 13 more episodes after series 9, including a Christmas Special. Those curious about Moffat’s departure will have ti wait a bit longer now which is no bad thing right now, Doctor Who is on form at the moment.
You lucky Who fans in the US will be able to see this years Christmas Special in cinemas thanks to Fathom Events. On the December 28th and 29th at 7:30, you can go see Who on the big screen which will also feature a 15 minute making of feature. Let us know if you plan on going.
“The Zygon Inversion” Review

Peter Capaldi was on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Wednesday morning and while chatting generally about Who, he did mention that Clara would be departing before the end of the series and that it would be very sad indeed. Tissues at the ready.
Jenna Coleman has been added to the upcoming Official Festival in London next weekend and we were even offered photo ops. Trouble is, the online system wasn’t great for this with lots of complaints to the BBC Festival twitter account. If anyone got a photo op with Jenna send us the pic.
Toys “R” Us are going to release an exclusive line of 5″ figures from Character. It’s a bit cheeky in a way as some of them are re-released in a newer box but the McGann figure looks awesome along with a couple of the Capaldi figures.
“The Zygon Invasion” Review
We’ve been looking forward to this story since it was announced before series 9 started, who doesn’t love a good Zygon? Here we see them putting their master plan into action to take over the world but does The Doctor have enough to stop them this time?

Interesting this one, we look forward to what they come up with.

No more vikings but a lion-man and lots of highway robberies. Ashilda has grown tired of human life and the world but the Doctor won’t give in. Does this conclusion satisfy or leave us also tired?

An unreleased spin-off adventure from the mid-ninteis titles Downtime is due to be released on the 16th November. Starring Nicholas Courtney as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, they investigate a sinister school run by Professor Travers along with the Great Intelligence. There has been some legal disputes but hopefully we’ll pick this up next month.
Another Lethbridge-Stewart related story. The third book Beast of Fang Rock is out today! Continuing on from the first two books in this series you can order from the Cookie Jar publishing site now. These books are an awesome read so go and get stuck in.
“The Girl Who Died” Review
Vikings, aliens, battles, faces explained and electric eels. After a really strong start to series 9 does this story retain the magic or do we fall in the mud, ready for the Mire to come get us?

After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year he’s come through treatment has been given the all clear. A couple of new commentaries will be with us soon for the once lost stories The Web of Fear and The Enemy of the World. Toby Hadoke will be getting the conversation going with Deborah Watling, Milton Johns and John Levene to name a few. Produced independently of the BBC, they will be available this November from Fantom Films.

The BBC are putting out a new Christmas Specials boxset on both Blu Ray and DVD which are available to pre-order now. It contains all 10 episodes from The Christmas Invasion through to Last Christmas plus some specially design Christmas cards. If you’re into the Who Christmas Specials and don’t own them, this could be for you.
“The Witch’s Familiar” Review
We scored The Magician’s Apprentice very high so how does this second part compare? More Daleks, more Clara and Missy and more of The Doctor being, well, The Doctor. It’s about to get very emotional.

Series 9 opener The Magician’s Apprentice has broken a US record with the shows largest premier of just over 2 million viewers within their target demographic of 18-49 year olds. This is great news that more people are watching and an increase from series 8, mostly younger viewers.
We now have confirmation that Jenna Coleman has left the show. What started as a 99% confirmed rumour last week turned to fact after Jenna herself told Radio 1 Breakfast show listeners the sad news. “I have left the Tardis – it’s happened, I’ve filmed my last scenes”. Now we have this confirmed it begs the question; when in series 9 will she go. We smell a new companion on the horizon.
“The Magician’s Apprentice” Review
It’s felt like a lifetime since series 8 was with us but the new series is finally here. We dive into the story, characters and themes to this belter of a series opener. Are we suitably impressed by it’s hype and excitement or left out on the battle fields of Skaro in the cold?

“Planet of the Ood” Review
Our last retro-review before we start our reviews of series 9. The Doctor and Donna are on the Ood-Sphere and things aren’t what they seem. Rabid, red-eye’d Ood along with sinister corrupt business types, this can’t be good. Do we leave this one with a twinkle of human kindness towards the Ood slaves or are we left cold outside on the barren landscape?

“The Deadly Assassin” Review
After a precognitive vision we’re back on Gallifrey for a classic Tom Baker story. Companionless The Doctor has been framed by The Master so it’s all going on. Does this often liked story get us rooting for the Doctor or does it leave us wandering around the Matrix?

The News
We’ve been thinking about this and wondering if it will happen for a while and now we have confirmation – River Song is back! The BBC have officially announced that River will be back for this year’s Christmas Special starring alongside Peter Capaldi. We’re not sure on River’s involvement past the Christmas Special and this is the only episode currently featuring the character that we’re aware of. Christmas is certainly looking to be a belter.
While Big Finish are pumping out some amazing audio plays we can’t forget some of the great BBC Audio books that have graced our ears. Coming this September are two interesting looking titles; The Two Doctors read by none other than Colin Baker and The Curse of Fenric read by Terry Molloy. These sound cool and worth checking out.
Rejoice! The long awaited troubled DVD The Underwater Menace has finally come up for pre-order on the BBC Shop site. Priced at PS13.99 it should be released on the 26th October. If you want a signed copy by Anneke Wills you can pre-order from her site for slightly more at PS18.99.
“Boom Town” Review
Ah Boom Town, the often misplaced episode from Who’s return in 2005. Viewed as a filler story before the two-part finale that follows can it redeem itself and go out with a boom or just fizzle out like a faulty extrapolator?

The News
Speaking of the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison himself has written his autobiography titled The Fifth(ish) Doctor: Peter Davison which is due out April 2016 and can be pre-ordered from Amazon. Very much looking forward to this one and an insight into Davison’s Doctor.
UK fans are finally getting the new Who series 1 – 4 on blu ray as separate editions. Up to now you could only get these on blu ray by purchasing the complete series 1-7 box set at a rather high price. These will be around PS20 and released on 31st August. Good news!
Unfortunate news for Who fans in the US hoping to attend the Symphonic Spectacular on the 7th October. Shows at the Barclays Centre in New York have been cancelled without reason. Ticket holders will be issued a refund however it’s still unclear as to why the shows have been pulled? Hopefully you’ll get a rescheduled date.
There’s another chance to see previews of the series 9 opening two-parter The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar. If you were lucky enough to get tickets that is. Run by BAFTA, they will host the two parter in Cardiff on 10th September followed by a Q&A with Capaldi, Coleman, Moffat and producer Brian Minchin. Once again, no spoilers please!
“Resurrection of the Daleks” Review
We travel back to 1984 this week for our review of this classic and often overshadowed Dalek story. Dark undertones, a high death count and a companion’s departure puts this tale at the more sombre end of the Doctor’s journey. Does it still impress or leave us feeling colder than a 90 year old cryogenic imprisonment?

As we reported last week with the US getting a cinema 3D showing of series 8’s two-part finale, some other counties are now following suit. You lucky folk in Denmark and Russia are now able to catch it too, also on the 15th and 16th of September.
Could we be getting more back links to previous series’ of Who? A recent location shoot has been confirmed at Eddie’s Diner in Cardiff, conveniently the same location used in The Impossible Astronaut. Hmmmm.
Show runner Steven Moffat has been teasing some more series 9 information in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine but this time very cryptic, using only a few words this time; "Cards", "Hybrid", "Cobbles", "Solo", "Dead". What can it all mean?
A new book series Doctor Who: The Complete History is coming next month. This impressive series of books goes behind the scenes of popular episodes from each Doctor’s era with a new book out each fortnight. If you want to find out more about the behind-the-scenes of Who, this could be for you.
“Hide” Review
Can Who do a good old fashioned ghost story? What turns out to be be a case of mistaken identity The Doctor and Clara must solve the case to help a stranded person in a pocket dimension. Does it put the hairs up on the back of our neck or does it leave us cold?

Our friends in the US will shortly be able to see the two-part finale from series 8 – Dark Water and Death in Heaven at the cinema in 3D and Dolby Atmos. Taking place on the 15th and 16th September this will be a nice event to lead you into series 9. Do a search for Fathom Events for ticket information.
Fancy owning a piece of Doctor Who history? One of the original Dalek props from 1963 that was also used in the docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time is going up for auction soon. Dalek “Dave” will be among lots of original movie props and memorabilia at an auction on 23rd September at London’s BFI IMAX. Bring your savings however as Dalek “Dave” is expected to go for anywhere between PS4000 – PS6000.
Big Finish seem to have once again come up with a delightful pairing, this time our classic investigators Jago and Litefoot are teaming up with Sontaran Commander Strax. Due out this November and up for pre-order now, the story takes place in Victorian London where they’re on the trail of a creature stealing brains and a haunted house. It would be a crime to not order this one!
A new trailer for series 9 dropped a few days ago and we chew the fat a little on what we can expect, what the Doctor will be wearing and will Clara be finally leaving or sticking around?
Lastly, some big names from Who have been seen together in and around Cardiff. David Tennant, Paul McGann and Russell T Davies have all been seen together and have got tongues wagging. We’re not reading too much into RTD based on his last comments about returning to Who but McGann and Tennant have the cogs turning. Hmmmm.
“The Mind Robber” Review
We’re off to The Land of Fiction for a classic Who story and that loveable fool Patrick Troughton. Full of suspense, humour and fairy tale this 60’s story pleases a lot of fans, but does it impress enough?

The News
The 6th Doctor Colin Baker’s new project has just been fully funded! Publicly funded movie Last Man on Earth is currently in rehearsal in Manchester with things moving nicely into production, thanks to your pledges. We’ll be on the look out for this upon release. You can find out more here.
Tucked away in the BBC Annual Review is a tiny nugget of important information – Doctor Who’s series 10 has now been confirmed. Assuming that at this stage in the game and DW’s global success episode 10 was a sure thing, the BEEB didn’t shout about it. Still at least we know it’ll be on our screens for another year at least.
Capaldi hints at a Caecilius return? We heard a while ago that in series 9 they would explain the reason for the Doctor being seen previously in The Fires of Pompeii. Well know Capaldi has confirmed this along with Moffat saying that it will be subtly referenced.
Some lucky folks will be seeing the series 9 opener The Magician’s Apprentice early as a special advanced screening is taking place on August 27th at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. No spoilers please!
“Love and Monsters” Review
Often viewed as one of the weakest episode’s in modern Who we’re getting stuck into this “Doctor-Lite” story to get to the bottom of the negative views plus also giving our own views and the oh-so important score. It’s gonna be a rough ride so batten down the hatches!

Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 49

The News
There’s been some initial buzz for Who fans since the reveal that Doctor Who is to feature in the upcoming LEGO Dimensions game. That news was trumped when this week a new video surfaced showing lots of Who gameplay, consisting of 12th Doctor malarky, Tardis interior (which looks awesome) plus a regeneration sequence showing all of the Doctor’s, right back to Hartnell, seemingly as playable characters. We can’t wait for this one.
We could be in for an episode with some cool Douglas Adams references in Series 9. Some pics have popped up showing some of the latest sets and one features three Tardis Blue coloured bottles with the words “Part 10″ but also the words “Answer to the question of life, the universe and everything in the galaxy.”, with some Gallifreyan behind them. There’s also references to 42, which we all know as the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything. These could be some cool setup’s for Series 9 or they could be just small hat tips to Douglas.
The official DW Instagram account has been putting up some very cryptic images of late. Blurry and out of focus shots with alien makeup being applied, haunted mansions, strange alien symbols and plenty of other stuff. They’re very good at teasing us right now.
“The Curse of the Black Spot” Review
We were looking forward to this one as hey, who doesn’t like pirates but do we get plenty of grrrr and sea shanty with this Matt Smith episode or is it a bit wet and damp?

Big Finish really are going for it this year. We’ve already had some good announcements such as the extended Doctor Who licence until 2020 and UNIT stories coming later this year but they’ve gone one further and have announced River Song is coming! Yes sweetie, River will feature in her own story, The Diary of River Song as well as joining up with 8th Doctor Paul McGann which is REALLY exciting! The last quarter of 2015 is going to be amazing if you’re into Big Finish.
Sad news if you’re still waiting to pick up The Underwater Menace on DVD. While it’s been coming for a long while now and even after receiving updates of potential release dates, the BBC have abandoned plans to release it as the company providing the animation has hit financial problems. We may see this released on another media int he future but as for a DVD release it looks unlikely for now. Bummer.
The Official Doctor Who Festival is heading down under. It only feels like yesterday that the BBC announced the Festival in London this November and now, pretty much straight after, it’s heading to Sydney Australia. 21st to the 22nd November in Moore Park, Sydney, will see Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat take up special guest duties.
“Timelash” Review
We’re back with The 6th Doctor for Timelash. It can be a tough old time seeing the best in some of Colin Baker’s stories so for this one, do we jump for joy or feel like it’s one never ending Kontron corridor?

If you’re enjoying the current run of Who comics from Titan then you’ll be pleased to hear that Year Two has been successfully commissioned and kicks off this September with stories for the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor’s. Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor: Year Two #1 lands Sep 9th and Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Year Two #1 is released Sep 16th. No word as yet on stories for the 9th or 12th Doctor’s but watch this space.
Dan Starky has been expanding his Who character repertoire lately. He was snapped at what looks like The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff in a custom made mini-Cyberman outfit. What can this mean? Is this something we’ll see in Series 9 this September or is it a bit of fun? Either way, Starky looks less than thrilled in the pics and we much prefer him as Commander Strax.
Capaldi and Coleman are going to Germany to play special guests at a Who event in Berlin. Friday 17th July sees a special fan event in the heart of Berlin and we think this is a great idea. As Who grows in popularity across Europe it’s only fitting that the stars pop over and say hi. If any of our German listeners attend please send us some pics!
“The Movie” Review
Ah, The Movie, or The TV Movie, or Doctor Who The Movie. Whatever your naming convention it’s a very different beast this one and a story we’ve been looking forward to reviewing for ages. You’ll know the drill with this one but does it leave us feeling regenerated and alive or cold and morgue-like?

We could have an “off the record” confirmed start time for series 9 – September. We suspected it may be August but producer Nikki Wilson let it slip on Twitter “We’ll be back in September”. So slightly later than we’d like as we’re desperate to get stuck into the new series but hey, it’s not much later.
Steven Moffat has bagged himself an OBE. For his services to drama the Moff has picked up one of the Queen’s honours and is well deserved in our opinion.
Colin Baker is to star in a new independent sci-fi short called Last Man on Earth. The official synopsis: “Last Man on Earth is a short pre-apocalypse sci-fi thriller about a virologist who is recruited to a bio research conglomerate to help work on a cure for cancer. It’s a film about decisions and their consequences. A story about the future told in the present day.” The project has already bagged around PS1600 in funding but it needs more to get to completion. If you want to see The 6th Doctor get back into sci-fi then jump over to the Indiegogo page and donate.
Lastly, our thoughts are with The War Doctor Sir John Hurt after he recently announced he’d been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We wish him the best and a speedy recovery.
“Time and the Rani” Review
This week we delve into Sylvester McCoy’s first story as The Doctor as he goes head-to-head with renegade Time Lady – The Rani. It’s full of deception, strange alliances, quirky one-liners, reptilian type people, large bat-type creatures and the playing of spoons. Is it one for the recommended list or does it need to be buried in a quarry somewhere? It’s our review of Time and the Rani.

Fans of series geek Osgood will be pleased to know that actress Ingrid Oliver is to join the cast and star alongside Jemma Redgrave for upcoming Big Finish spin off UNIT: Extinction. We love Osgood here on the podcast and can’t wait to get this one delivered.
The BBC are getting fond of festivals this year as the Radio Times Festival heads to Greater London in September. Part of the lineup will be a celebration of Doctor Who (among other great BBC shows) with panels and presentations featuring Steven Moffat, Peter Capaldi and Russell T Davies. Tickets go on sale to the public on the 23rd June.
The mysterious writer for episode 10 that the BEEB blurred out has now been revealed as Sarah Dollard. Those of you who aren’t familiar with Dollards work will definitely know some of the programs she’s written for which include Merlin, Primeval, Being Human and many more.
Strangely, a supporting cast member from series 8 will be joining us for episode 10 of the new series – Rigsy. You will remember him from the awesome episode Flatline in featuring the Boneless. Interesting to see where his character fits in for the new run.
“New Earth” Review
The Doctor and Rose come bounding onto our screens for the first episode of series 2. Plenty of classic Tennant in this one with Rose playing a dual role for most of the story. Human sized cats, nasty diseases and The Face of Bo. It’s all going on but does The Doctor nurse our viewing pleasure or does it leave us feeling like we’ve got the flu?

Doctor Who is to appear in the new LEGO Dimensions game. We’re super excited about this as it feels like Doctor Who should have been a part of LEGO for years now. The game due to launch in September this year and features physical LEGO toys which are then placed onto a pad which “magically” places them into the game.
The BEEB has gone all mysterious on us. They posted a short news snippet regarding the read through for episode 10 of the new series but have blurred out the title and the writers name? The post also includes this cryptic line “We'll have more big news for you soon, both about the ongoing production of the new series and the broader world of Doctor Who. As the Doctor himself might say, it's a roller coaster, isn't it?”. Hmmmm.
Big news to finish off with! As though the convention God’s were listening to our rant about how the stars of Doctor Who don’t attend many UK conventions we’re now going to get an entire weekend convention this November. Yes, the Doctor Who Festival starts Friday 13th November until Sunday 15th and will feature Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat among others. There will also be behind the scenes production talks, cosplay showcase, meet the writers, a drama school and much more. “City of Death” Review
Classic Who goes international for City of Death with the romantic city of Paris as a backdrop to this alien story. It has it all – crashed spaceships, funny one liners, reversed polarity and sinister aliens. However, does it leave us with a sweet taste of wine and grapes or is it like a bowl of cooked frogs?

A bitter sweet bit of news for UK fans, the principle cast of DW (Capaldi, Coleman, Gomez and Moffat) are going to Comic Con San Diego. This is awesome news as the show’s international reach and prominence is increased but please, folks of the BBC, we have a couple of great conventions too you know.
A new book is out in October which looks like it’s going to be a corker _Doctor Who: Impossible Worlds: A 50-Year Treasury of Art and Design. The book will cover the design and evolution of things like sets, costumes, spacecraft etc and will include plenty of photos, write ups and even trivia. Pre-order your copy here.
Good news for DW fans in India as we hear that modern Who has been broadcast since 15th May on FX. It’s gained a lot of traction internationally over the last 10 years and to now see it broadcast in India is another step forward.
“The Lodger” Review
It’s back to modern Who this week as we look at a series 5 Matt Smith and James Corden team up in this creepy tale of sinister aliens, a Doctor adapting to human life and a love story which comes good. Does it leave us cheering like fans at a Sunday league football game or bored up on the second floor?

The News
Wether you agree or disagree with his direction over the last few years, it seems Moffat is here to stay for at least series 10. It seems he’s not done with Who just yet and there’s more stories he wants to explore which leads us onto...
Steven Moffat is at odds with the 12th Doctor himself Peter Capaldi regarding the Doctor’s feelings towards Clara. Moffat believes the Doctor has always fancied Clara while Capaldi disagrees and is obviously not comfortable with that theory. We’ll see how that one plays out in series 9.
One of those “weird” ones for you, comic book fans will be upset to learn that a Doctor Who/Spider-Man crossover has been cancelled. Yes, Marvel’s web slinger was due to cross-over with the Doctor, presumably within comics, but after five years of development it’s been canned.
Talking of comics, Titan have a summer comic event lined up consisting of a one-off five issue run but what’s cool is issue one will feature John Hurt’s War Doctor. Will definitely have that one on pre-order.
Lastly, those of you subscribing to the global BBC iPlayer outside of the UK, the service is being discontinued as of June 26th. Apparently the BBC are launching a new digital media subscription service but we’re not sure on timings, we’ll let you all know when we do.
“Carnival of Monsters” Review
Lot’s going on in this week’s review episode as we talk through this Pertwee classic. The Doctor and Jo find themselves trapped within a travelling entertainer’s Miniscope along with other “aliens”. Do we get excited for this one or scream like Drashigs?

The News
Osgood and the Zygons are back for series 9! Yes, that jaw-dropping moment when Osgood was killed, is now being explained in the upcoming series. As we asked ourselves at the time, was it Osgood or the "Zygon-Osgood" who bit the dust? We'll soon find out.
A special anniversary event is being held in New York to celebrate 10 years of Who. Organised by BAFTA Cymru, Cardiff Business Council, BBC America and BAFTA New York, it's a night to celebrate the enormous talent and work of the teams in Wales and to mix with the US guys. It sounds like a great event but we do have a few thoughts on this one.
Jenna Coleman has put laid to rest a few rumours that her character has little to no involvement in series 9. With many set photos now released it's an easy one to debunk and while it was purely speculation Jenna has gone on record to confirm her part in the next series.
Stand up comic Lee Mack has been onto the peeps at the BBC, desperate to land a guest role in Doctor Who. I guess hoping to follow in the footsteps of Frank Skinner, Mack wants to put a tick in the box as a Who fan.
"Father's Day" Review
This episode was released 10 years ago yesterday and although we hadn't noticed, it's a very well timed review. An early episode of the Eccleston run it's an emotional and well written story but does it leave us teary eyed and happy or bored and wanting more? Listen on to find out.
