#193 The Restortion of Damaged Art
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2We discuss The Evil of the Daleks recently released as an animated recreation or reinterpretation of the 1967 story starring Patrick Troughton. Ben is intrigued by the decisions the production team made that diverge from the original presentation and likens the animation project to the restoration of damaged art. David wonders if Whitaker's script could be tighter with fewer characters. Along the way we, discover Rutans disguised as Christmas puddings, ponder why Maxtible has a dungeon and traps and a Turkish wrestler on staff, and the lost story of the great Dalek-Chumbley war. Opening music is Jack Trombley's "Mexican Beat" and closing music is the Dalek's entrance music composed by Dudley Simpson, both pieces are from The Evil of the Daleks soundtrack. We recorded this episode on 30 December 2021.

Episode 9 - The Sea-Devils (with Frazer Gregory)
Doctor Who LiteratureIt's October 1974, and Malcolm Hulke's third novelization of the year. He'll never have another year this prolific, but what a trilogy of books he's left us. Doctor Who and the Sea-Devils is the shortest of the bunch, but don't let the length fool you; there's some terrific material here in terms of character insights and observational humor. Even if there aren't too many actual Sea-Devils.
In the first half of the episode, I break down Hulke's writing style in the book, and catalogue the many changes from screen to book.
In the second half, I'm joined by one of my favorite podcast guests, Frazer Gregory, who shares his memories of this novelization, and does some of the best dramatic readings from the book that you'll find, outside of the Target novelization audiobook range.
This may be the end of Doctor Who and the Sea-Devils, but the Sea Devils will return.

Rob and Dave Unplugged 2
The Doctor Who ShowJanuary 5, 2022 saw Rob and Dave catch up, in person, in Sydney. Being based in different Australian cities - and the pandemic - it was only the third time they've met in person since first meeting on January 27, 2018.
That first meeting resulted in a lo-fi, hotel room recording which got called, 'Rob and Dave Unplugged' where the guys discussed fandom in Australia, and their roles in it (and out of it), during the 80s, 90s, 00s, and beyond.
For this latest meeting, the lo-fi, hotel room recording vibe is back. Strap in for, 'Rob and Dave Unplugged 2' where, this time around, the guys take 19 questions and a comment, from their social media followers, and answer them all.
The questions take the chat over the place, from hypothetical Doctor Who scenarios, to our favourite Australian bands, to questions about the podcast itself. A veritable cornucopia if you have an hour, or so, to spend with the guys.

350: Drains on the Brains (Eve of the Daleks)
Trust Your DoctorI suppose there are worse things to have on the brain.
It’s Eve of the Daleks, written by Chris Chibnall and aired on January 1, 2022
Show-notes:
2:55: For some reason I will take this opportunity to link you to our Heaven Sent episode, over a year ago!
4:00: Not gonna link this.
8:01: Jar Jar Binks is canon to the Doctor Who universe.
20:02: Here’s the TARDIS wiki page on time loops.
22:00: Trust Your Doctor released its first episode on January 24, 2014. This episode is no longer in the podcast feed, because it’s pretty bad. It’s been since replaced by a re-recorded version that was backdated.
29:36: You are a sad, strange little man.
33:30: The official Doctor Who youtube account, in what may have been a bout of prescience, uploaded the clip of Dan literally running circles around the Dalek for all to enjoy. (It actually wasn’t a bout of prescience since they uploaded the clip on the 3rd, well after there was enough time to gauge whether it would be regarded as one of the best scenes in the episode, which I would assume it was and which I personally think it is, but whatever.)
36:02: Paying tax on illegal money is something about how you’re supposed to be taxed on total income, not just total legal income.
45:50: The character Dan worked with at the food bank was Wilma.
47:38: Troll 2, the greatest masterpiece of 20th-century film, is actually a movie we’ve watched on Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast, our movie trilogy podcast, so check that episode out.
54:31: Here’s some more information on the gunpowder plot (and Guy Fawkes), courtesy of Wikipedia.
58:57: I didn’t even bother to try find this tweet. (Editor’s note: Same. Forget that, lol)
1:00:40: Here’s a link to the official BBC Sea Devil promo images. This article also includes an image from the Third Doctor serial, The Sea Devils, indicating that the sea devil itself does not seem to have been so massively redesigned as we thought.
1:19:14: EthelredBusybody’s review of Eve of the Daleks.
1:20:10: Flux and Beyond, by busclas.
1:26:11: Brigadier Bambera is BACK. LETS GO.
1:26:50: Frazer Hines isonly 77, actually.

Rob and Dave Unplugged 2
The Doctor Who ShowJanuary 5, 2022 saw Rob and Dave catch up, in person, in Sydney. Being based in different Australian cities - and the pandemic - it's actually been almost four years since this last happened; January 27, 2018 to be precise.
That last meeting resulted in a lo-fi, hotel room recording which got called, 'Rob and Dave Unplugged' where the guys discussed fandom in Australia, and their roles in it (and out of it), during the 80s, 90s, 00s, and beyond.
For this new meeting, the lo-fi, hotel room recording vibe is back.
