Hey Who fans! We have some very sad news on all counts this week, a single piece of merch then onto our review of Night Terrors.

    The News

It’s with great sadness that we say goodbye to Sir John Hurt who passed away aged 77. As Who fans we knew him as the War Doctor but he had a wonderful career playing some wonderful roles over the years, namely The Elephant Man, Kane (and the awesome/horrific chest busting scene) in Alien and Mr Olivander in Harry Potter. Good bye old bean.

Big Finish has picked up a BBC Drama Award! The award for Best Online/non Broadcast Drama was for Absent Friends, part one from Doom Coalition 3 boxset. Well done indeed!

More sad news, Peter Capaldi has announced his departure from Who in an emotional interview with Jo Whiley on her BBC Radio 2 show. As you can imagine, we have quite a few words to say about this.

    Merch Corner

Cosplay clothing site Abbyshot have put the new 12th Doctor Red Velvet Coat up for pre-order. Looks great on Peter Capaldi, maybe you too?

    “Night Terrors” Review

As big fans of Matt Smith’s Doctor we were both looking forward to reviewing one of his stories but, it’s one we’ve not seen in ages and throws opinions down the middle. Suitably creeped out or feeling sleepy?

Thank you for as always for listening and getting in touch. Next week, for classic week, we’re looking at The 5th Doctor story Time-Flight. Until then have an awesome week and remember – Allons-y!

MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast 120 - SHERLOCK Series Rankings with Kayti Burt; Capaldi Announces Exit; Sir John Hurt Appreciation

    Mutter's Spiral Podcast

    Direct Podcast Download

    19:09 (GMT) - 2 Feb 2017

It's a jam-packed and bittersweet edition of the MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast this week! Our friend Kayti Burt joins us to talk all about SHERLOCK, as we discuss her great ranking of the show's episodes, from worst to best, that she did for Collider.com (Link HERE ). We've been trying to have her on for a couple of weeks, and we finally solved our usual tech issues to get her on the podcast! HOWEVER...

In the interim from our original recording date to the actual date, several sad occurrences of various forms have happened:

    1. Peter Capaldi has announced that he's leaving DOCTOR WHO after the Christmas 2017 episode (Same time that Steven Moffat departs). We discuss his decision and talk about some of our favorites for #13.

    2. Even more sad is the news of the passing of the War Doctor, SIR JOHN HURT. We talk of his significance to all of WHO fandom as well as each of us individually (Especially John, as Sir John in many ways led him into Whovian fandom). We discuss the great privilege that John & I had of meeting him and interacting last year at Gallifrey One.

SO - that leads to a 2 hour episode, but one that I think is one of our very best (and easily broken up into shorter chunks).

As a bonus, you'll hear Sir John himself, doing 2 of WHO's most famous speeches: William Hartnell's farewell to Susan from "Dalek Invasion of Earth" (and "The Five Doctors") AND the 12th Doctor's exquisite speech from "The Zygon Inversion".

    PLEASE take a listen. Thanks!!

    05:00 (GMT) - 2 Feb 2017

This title was released digitally only in December 2016, and on CD in January 2016. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until March 31st 2017, and on general sale after this date. Time travelling archaeologist and adventurer River Song returns - and this time she will be stepping into the past life of the Doctor, encountering two of his incarnations at once! From the space exploration vessel Saturnius - which is heading to a destination that never gets any closer - to a doomed planet Earth and beyond, River's journey will bring her closer to a new foe... and an encounter with both the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. 2.1 The Unknown by Guy Adams A planetary anomaly. A scientific impossibility. A mystery to be solved. Of course, River Song expects to be consulted. She expects her valuable knowledge and experience will help the crew of the Saturnius unlock the strange phenomenon that has appeared in Earth's solar system. But what River doesn't expect is a stowaway. An infuriating little man, calling himself the Doctor. 2.2 Five Twenty-Nine by John Dorney River has made a terrible discovery. Billions of lives hang in the balance. But if she can save just a few, then it might just help her solve the conundrum of Earth's destruction. But how can she win when survival becomes a race against time itself? A race against Five Twenty-Nine? 2.3 World Enough and Time by James Goss When it comes to bringing down corrupt and exploitative regimes, there is no-one quite like River. Until she arrives at Golden Futures and discovers that someone else has already taken on her job. Someone with almost as much style and panache as herself. The Doctor is about to get the shock of his lives. 2.4 The Eye of the Storm by Matt Fitton The Great Storm of 1703 approaches. The fate of planet Earth hangs in the balance. The only person who can save it is the Doctor. Or River Song. Or quite possibly another Doctor. Or maybe this whole situation is their fault in the first place. Two Doctors. One River. An infinite number of ways to destroy the world. It's going to be a bumpy ride... Yeah, this is worth breaking a hiatus again.

We've had just two years with him, and then a whole Wilderness Year without him (save an appearance on Class), and now we've found out that Series 10 and the following Christmas special will mark the end of Peter Capaldi's too-short run. Alyssa "@WhovianFeminism" Franke and I celebrate his time on the show, speculate on his final series, and prognosticate about what may follow.

In Episode 41: Entropy Of Columbo, the boys listen to the latest audio adventures of the War Doctor, contemplate the Doctor’s mental health, study the second law of thermodynamics and its relation to the 1981 Fourth Doctor adventure Logopolis, and decide which is the ultimate regeneration story: Planet of The Spiders, Logopolis, or The Caves of Androzani.

    Notes and, um, Apologies
-Joshua mistakenly refers to the Harry Potter character Mad Eye Moody as “Mad Dog.” Don’t tell his wife and daughter. They will never let him live it down.
-Speaking of mad dogs, Pat’s neighbor has a new pup and apparently it has a lot to say about Logopolis. Please forgive the occasional outburst of yapping toward the end of the podcast.

This week, The Five Faces of Delusion take a look at two stories from Jon Pertwee’s final season. With “Invasion of the Dinosaurs” we show how, if you look beyond the ropey models and the heavy “Eastenders” influences, this story is essentially Malcolm Hulke doing to the Communist Party of Great Britain what Robert Holmes did to the Inland Revenue with “The Sun Makers”. With “Planet of the Spiders” we draw a direct line from this story to the twin literary masterpieces “Flowers for Algernon” and “Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH”.

Along the way, we look at how Rick James was knocked off the top spot he’d occupied since “The Mutants”. We question whether one’s attitude to the Third Doctor’s authoritarianism changes with the onset of fatherhood. We explain how The Whomobile was the Wonderbra of its day. And we poke our noses into Richard Franklin’s political career.

Mark’s daughter, Polly, was so inspired by “Invasion of the Dinosaurs” that she wants to watch another UNIT story next. Send us your recommendations for the best UNIT story for Mark to watch with her.

Well, after the lads had finished recording, the news broke that Peter Capaldi announced that he was leaving the role of the Doctor. Despite being caught on the hop, this not entirely unexpected turn of events never the less shocked certain fans but also there was the earth shattering news that Sir John Hurt sadly passed away and we also lost Philip Bond.

But once the news is discussed, it's down to business with their review of the Target novelisation of The Curse of Peladon by Brian Hayles. This is story is held in high regard by both Phil and Paul and never more relevant than it has ever been, so it was with some trepidation that Paul approached this story as he didn't want to get caught out by an appearance of King Peladon's thigh boots!

Well, things are going further downhill, as Sean begins to talk of what makes Podcast Code (or Gold). We are not friendly to Nicola's acting here leading into Part 3, and despite this - we press on by attempting to speak about other topics vs the actual episode itself. Again, this is why The High Council is different every week, and perhaps the fact that everyone has been podcasting for approximately 4 hours by this time has effected the behavior. Oh, yeah - we also talk about Colin Baker's cat pins.

You shouldn’t mess with the power of Malcolm, it might kill you.

This week we’re on the downslope for season 24 already. We’re already 3/4 of the way through the serial, although if they had done a 6 part serial we’d be done already. Wouldn’t that be great? It’s Delta and the Bannerman, written by Malcolm Kohll, and aired in November of 1987.

    Show-notes:
04:36 Now only a $100 value! Sure must be the happiest place on earth for whoever’s raking in all this money.
