We've been waiting for this for some time, and not for the reasons you might think. Well frankly, we think those yella-bellied nay-sayin' so-and-sos are just doin' it wrong. Viewed in the right light, it's a perfectly enjoyable (and at times, outright comedic) romp, and as we discuss, might even be self-aware -- which makes it all the better. This week, we shake the dust from our boots and saddle up to "The Gunslingers", that fateful moment where Doctor Who took on the Tombstone story. Complete with quick draws, jail breaks, and possibly the worst earworm of a theme song ever composed, we spend a little time panning the mud, and find comedy gold. Hey Who fans! The usual waffle followed by some cool little news items then we get educated in all things Aztec as we fly back to the 15th century for this week’s review story – The Aztecs.

The News

The 6th Doctor Colin Baker is returning to the airwaves as new Big Finish stories are to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra. The Crimes of Thomas Brewster start things off this Saturday at 6pm. This weekend will also see a repeat of the 50th anniversary radio documentary Who Made Who. Both shows will be available to listen to via BBC iPlayer for the next month.

Fancy owning a piece of Doctor Who history? Have deep pockets? Well auctioneers Bamfords are holding an online auction this Wednesday 8th June where you can pick up some great costumes, props and other stuff from the classic era. Ever fancied owning a DW Pinball machine, a Dalek coin-op kids ride or a Davros head? This could be the time to get them!

Alyssa, author of the Whovian Feminism blog (whovianfeminism.tumblr.com), wrote an essay called "A Love Letter to My Problematic Favs." In it, she said:

I try to let myself love my favorite characters as much as I can, even when they can sometimes make me so uncomfortable I can't bear to watch them onscreen. I try to defend them against criticism I think is unfair (after all, female characters come in for a disproportionate amount of sexist criticism), while at the same time trying to keep my mind open to new critical perspectives.

Maintaining a healthy perspective is tough, and we don't always strike the right balance. But ultimately, that challenge can be a rewarding experience. In struggling to come to terms with all the ways I love and have been let down by my problematic favs, I think I've become a better feminist and fangirl.

Chip invited Alyssa to reflect a month later on what she wrote. As fate would have it, that turned out to be the same time that representation and fan entitlement became a hot topic.
