  • Andrew Cartmel on the PodKast!

    2 November 2012 (8:35pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 45 minutes and 55 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Whoah yes, former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel (1987-1989) joins us on the podKast (with a “K”) this week to chat about a new project, Doctor Who Fan Fiction Illustrated!

With Hans Christian Vang as his partner for this exciting new crowdsourcing proposal, Andrew is onboard to further the legendary “Cartmel Masterplan” – the term given to the restoration of mystery and mystique that typified his time on the show.

This week, you won’t find a mysterious time-wimey "Previously on next week's podKast" sentence to look out for - instead, it should pop up in the next podKast.

Now, if you’re a new listener, here’s how you can listen to our weekly podKast:

    1. Use the player in the top right of each page on Kasterborous.
    2. Listen with the "pop out" player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.
    3. Third, you can take advantage of the RSS feed to subscribe to the podKast for your media player, and also find us on iTunes!

Now then, the important part: please back Fan Fiction Illustrated at www.indiegogo.com/ffidw – should the project not go ahead, funds will be returned to the backers, so no one is out of pocket.

We weren’t entirely clear with the way in which the chosen funding model works while recording the podKast, but can explain more below.

If enough money is raised to do a smaller print run, that options will be taken. While the goal is to do 1500-2000 units, if enough is raised to do 1000 then that is what will happen. Below this, and Hans will cancel the project. (Note that IndieGoGo offers two funding options, Fixed and Flexible. If the fixed option was used, the project would automatically be cancelled even if enough was gathered to do a smaller print run – so flexible has been selected.)

Everybody wins – but we’re backing Hans and Andrew to produce what promises to be a major new player in the Doctor Who comic strip world!

This week’s podKast (with a “K”) takes a slightly different flavour as Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss Doctor Who non-fiction, specifically reference books.

The Comic Strip Companion: the Unofficial and Unauthorised Guide to Doctor Who in Comics: 1964 - 1979

Armed with a copy of Lance Parkin’s A History and Paul Scoones’ The Comic Strip Companion: 1964-1979, your hosts spend time simply delving in at random and discussing the results! This makes for a wide-ranging conversation, enhanced further when Christian chats to Paul Scoones himself.

Once again, you'll find a mysterious time-wimey "Previously on next week's podKast" sentence to look out for – let us know if you spotted it from last week’s closing segment. Confused? You should be...

You can listen to our weekly podKast in one (or all, if you're a glutton for punishment) of three ways:

    18 October 2012 (11:04am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 54 minutes and 17 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Angry Tom, Bonkers Tom, returning-for-the-fiftieth-anniversary-or-not Tom – it’s all here in the latest Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) as we spend the best part of an hour mulling over the force of nature, the eighth wonder of the universe that is…

    Tom Baker!

Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian Terranova chew the scarf on the legendary Fourth Doctor, covering moments from Robot through to Logopolis, even going to the trouble of suggesting some undervalued episodes from Tom’s mammoth 1974-1981 tenure in the role.

While Tom himself doesn’t actually appear on this podKast, you may nevertheless hear him say a few new things, exclusively for us (okay… they’re BT voicemail messages, recorded back in 2007, but damn it, they’re funny).

Once again, you’ll find a mysterious time-wimey "Previously on next week's podKast" sentence to look out for, as reminded at the start of the show. Confused? You should be...

Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 57 minutes and 53 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

We’ve been talking about doing this podKast for literally months, but thanks to the end of Series 7 we’ve finally got around to dedicating a podKast to arguably Doctor Who‘s most divisive producer, John Nathan-Turner!

Starting with his first series in charge and making reference to his success as a production unit manager, we look at how Doctor Who changed during his stewardship, how the BBC changed and we also consider whether the series had really “had its day” as the BBC regularly indicated in the 1990s.

Don’t forget to look out for this week’s “Previously on next week’s podKast” sentence, in which a timey-wimey occurrence means that a stray phrase was captured and placed at the end of last week’s podKast. Confused? You will be…

    Direct Podcast Download

We laughed, we cried, we said goodbye… this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) features Christian Cawley and James McLean discussing the merits (or otherwise) of the Doctor Who Series 7a conclusion, The Angels Take Manhattan.

After a year and a half of questions and complaints about Amy Pond, will James finally be glad to see the back of her? Will the reappearance of River Song have left him chewing his fist in anger? And will Christian’s long-standing love of Steven Moffat see him declare Series 7a as the best ever?

    The answers might surprise you…

Regular listeners of the podKast will know that it is available in three ways. First, you can use the player in the top right of each page on Kasterborous. Second, you can use the “pop out” player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.

We’ve also got an interview with Ryan Hendrick, whose Doctor Who fan film Besieged is set to be released at the end of September. Built up from a much shorter film released in 2010, the movie is a Doctor Who/Alien crossover. If the trailer is anything to go by, this will certainly be worth watching!

Even one would be great, two is an absolute joy. All on the Kasterborous team should feel very honoured to be nominated and Our Benevolent Overlord is over the moon about it!

More importantly, the fact that we’re nominated at all is down to you, our esteemed readers who have shown immense taste and indeed sense in choosing Kasterborous as your daily Doctor Who news and reviews destination.

We’ve been bringing news, reviews, interviews and opinions to Doctor Who fans since 2004, and running a podKast since 2006 (going weekly in early 2011) and it’s absolutely thrilling that we should get a nomination in one category, never mind two!

Should you wish to demonstrate to the entire world just what great taste you have, you can click the links below to Kast your votes… (although note that registration at the DWO forum is required).

The Doctor is in trouble in the Asylum of the Daleks!

This is the podKast you don’t want to miss – Doctor Who is back and we’re raring to go with our fantastic discussion and review of Asylum of the Daleks!

While our American team member Brian Terranova might have been gracious enough to hold back on spoilers and “ner ner ne-ner ner” taunting of having seen it first, he’s managed to retain his enthusiasm for the episode for an extra week. Not that it is needed as despite a few characterization issues and the seemingly-ongoing discussion about the use of classic Daleks (or otherwise) James McLean also bristles with pleasure over the episode.

In fact it’s a full house – but don’t let that fool you as there is plenty more to chat about, from semantics about Skaro to whether Matt Smith is hanging up his dickie bow any time soon.

So, how do you enjoy the podKast (with a “K”)? Well, you’ve probably spotted the player just above, not to mention the player in the top of the right sidebar.

    Direct Podcast Download

It’s podKast time again, and this week Brian Terranova, Christian Cawley and James McLean are taking a wider view of recent news and events, including some cosplay competition success for Brian, a recent viewing of The War Machines for Christian and thoughts on John Simm vs Derek Jacobi as the Master for James.

You won’t be surprised to learn that there is some Series 7 speculation in there too, mainly concerning the broadcast date. At the time of recording we still didn’t know about the most likely (but yet to be confirmed) date, so forgive us for our calendar musings at the back end of the discussion.

  • A Mary Tamm PodKast

    5 August 2012 (8:05pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 38 minutes and 20 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Doctor Who fans were left aghast recently at the sad loss of the original Romana, Mary Tamm, who died aged just 62. A few days later, character actor and one-time guest on the show (Trial of a Time Lord conclusion The Ultimate Foe) Geoffrey Hughes, known to millions as Coronation Street‘s Eddie Yates and Keeping Up Appearances‘ Onslow, also died.

As such, our latest podKast begins on a sad note, building up to an interesting chat about the Key to Time season, the way fandom reacts to the death of Doctor Who stars and we even give some thought as to how a Cyberman version of Asylum of the Daleks (basically every Cyberman ever in one episode) might work.

This week it’s Christian Cawley and James McLean on podKast duty, so sit back, press play or hit the download button and enjoy!

  • Scantily Clad PodKast

    29 July 2012 (2:21pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 1 second

    Direct Podcast Download

You may have seen in the press recently details of an online spat between one-time Doctor Who guest (and well-known geek) Simon Pegg and a cosplay lady who took exception to some of his borderline-sexist (there’s an ironic/post-modern argument in there if you want to look for it) comments concerning cosplayers dressed as Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi.

As cosplay is something that has becoming a major element of Doctor Who fandom in recent years, and given that our very own Brian Terranova spends a lot of time dressed up as Leela dressed as the Tenth Doctor, we thought that a great topic for this latest podKast would be the very topic of sexism within fandom, particularly within cosplaying circles.

This week’s podKast is brought to you by James McLean and Brian Terranova.

You can listen to this weekas podKast via the player gadget above, where you will also find an option to download. You’ll also find the podKast at the top of the right column on every page here on Kasterbororous. If you prefer to collect your podcasts from iTunes, however, use the search tool to find us.

It’s that time of week again, Kasterborites, where James McLean, Christian Cawley and Brian Terranova pluck one of the many subjects of Doctor Who and offer their thoughts about it.

This time around, we’re dedicating an entire podKast (with a “K”) to the legendary, oft-overlooked yet hugely important Ninth Doctor, as played by the statuesque Christopher Eccleston. From “Run!” to “Before I go…” we discuss his appearance in books, continuity, his legacy and the reasons for his mysterious departure…

You too can dress like Jason Donovan!

A little later than intended, this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) turns its attention to the matter of the Doctor’s sartorial elegance (or in some cases, lack of…)

There isn’t a single incarnation of the friendly Time Lord who hasn’t raised eyebrows with his choice of attire. While some choices have been great, others have been… less successful, shall we say. Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean have a right old chat about the situation in the latest podKast, concluding with a declaration of their individual favourite looks across Doctor Who’s 49 years.

    Direct Podcast Download

Chewing the fat on what has been taking place in the Doctor Who world lately are Brian Terranova, James McLean and Christian Cawley, who despite their obvious, unrivalled professionalism on the podKast haven’t received a Bafta lately (or, indeed, at all).

Fear not, however, at least one of them has been in the same room as two of the subjects of this week’s podKast with a K – Steven “The Grand Moff” Moffat (aka The Moffinator) and Matt Smith.

This week we look at Steven Moffat’s much-deserved Bafta award and some of the odd reaction to this on Twitter, as well as chat about Matt Smith carrying the Olympic torch (and being slightly distracted by the issue of blanket coverage of the subject).

We’re a little earlier with this week’s podKast – which is just as well as we’re talking about some pretty topical stuff, namely the questions over the scheduling of Doctor Who Series 7, the coming BAFTA special achievement award for Steven Moffat and Kasterborous’ own review marathon in which we cover every serial from An Unearthly Child/100,000 BC to Survival.

We reckon the issue over scheduling needs to be taken more seriously with a lot more clarity from the BBC. Do you agree? Should there be some honesty rather than spin?

We always love to hear from our listeners so if you have anything to say, leave your comments below and we’ll raise them in the next podKast. Alternatively, drop us a line via the Contact Us page.

  • Tom MacRae On Television Panel!

    13 May 2012 (6:54am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Regular listeners to the Kasterborous PodKast (with a “K” – the player is on the right) will know that Tom MacRae, writer of such Doctor Who classics as Rise of the Cybermen/The Age Of Steel and The Girl Who Waited, was interviewed by Our Benevolent Overlord on the most recent edition.

On the off-chance that OBO’s extensive chat with him wasn’t enough for you, an opportunity has come up to see him and hear his wise words on the TV Panel of Kapow! Comic Con 2012, a convention in Merry Ol’ London!

Held on 19th-20th May at the London Business Design Centre in Islington, the convention brings all manner of television, film and comic stars to the public (where autographs are free, which will be a relief to the poorer fans). However, the main focus of this article is on one of the panels that they’re hosting.

The panel in question is on Sunday features Tom MacRae, Russell Tovey (Doctor Who, Being Human, Sherlock), Adam Garcia, Lucy Brown (Primeval) and Tom Allen. This team of interesting individuals has come together to answer the following question:

How much is creating a joke like constructing a high concept narrative?

The convention also features An Audience With Nick Frost, the team behind Batman: Arkham City and Jimmy Carr interviewing Frankie Boyle in what promises to be a controversial and anti-Royalty chat.

If this sounds like it’s up your street (or, in the case of our Islington-dwelling readers, literally up your street), then hurry up and book tickets for the event from the website, as they only allow advance booking and won’t be selling tickets on the day! This sounds like a must for any fan of pop culture, barring the poorer ones such as myself.
